Just found out that we now arent allowed to send personal emails from work due to the lower level staff totally abusing it.

What would be the implications of setting up another email account in outlook, google mail or similar, and using that for personal emails?

Yes I know I shouldnt be doing it but would there be anyway of them tracking another account that isnt through exchange?

No PC brigade please, I only send maybe half a dozen a day.

Thanks

Darth Vader will shoot you in the testicals and then lightsaber your pinkies off if you do any such thing.

This is probably not true and a webmail based solution will be best if allowed. Consult your IT policy for clarification.

Just spoke to the IT manager and he said management wouldnt get pulled up on providing its not excessive but only laughed when I asked if he would be able to trace another pop3 account in my outlook!!

I told him I was going to make sure he pay is cocked up this month :D

2 questions

a) how are they going to enforce it ?

&

b) who are "they"

:)

a) Dont know, havent a clue how things are set up or what can be tracked etc

b) Not sure exactly what you mean here but by "they" are my employers.

I would guess that the IT people would be able to block any SMTP / POP3 access that wasn't to / from their Exchange server - as well as that you probably had to sign up to the IT departments terms and conditions which, if its anything like ours at work, means they can monitor your Internet usage and could trace it there.

Thats all guessing, but its not hard to do - whether you want to take the chance is up to you :)

Nothing to do with "pC brigade", it's normal to use work email for personal use now and then through the day... eveyone from assistants to partners do it in our multi-national company. Unless they actively block the webmail pages then use your knouse and sign up for Yahoo. :p

Alternatively get a decent touch-screen or messaging phone that lets you do it from there. :)

As others have said just use a webmail of some form, (Yahoo, GMail, Hotmail etc) ... this is also better in the current economic environment as if you are made redundent then you don't have to worry about personal emails being in you work Outlook.

Also you can then access it easily from any other machine on the internet or via phone with gprs/3g.
