Work Email

I email friends but its rare its anything I wouldn't admit in an office actually goes through it. Only recently as I've been going through some hard times.

Also anyone outside of work I have auto rules setup to go to a personal folder so it doesn't intrude on my actual inbox. My boss knows full well I do this. Does he care? Nope because pretty much everyone else including him are the same. Providing I get my work finished etc he lets us do what we like.

We are grown adults. If we haven't got the savvy to prioritise our work load inc managing emails then we shouldn't be in the job.

that's the main thing... if everyone is sensible with work e-mails then there shouldn't be a drama - I know a lot of the people I'd be e-mailing socially are monitored and mails are written knowing full well that other people in compliance or at regulators could be reading them too.

I have no idea what our work policy is regarding using work email for personal stuff. I've never asked, it wouldn't even cross my mind.

I don't even have my work email on my phone any more. It's on my machine at work and my machine at home and that's quite enough thank you. I don't need it going off when there's nothing I can do about it anyway. I took it off to go on holiday and just never put it back on.

On the one site where I work, I can't have my mobiles/company laptop so I only have my client laptop, so I sometimes email my girlfriend if something comes up.

Just work. I don't view forums/fb/gmail etc either via work (not tried /tested), can just do on phone instead if I wish.

problewm is your hadnign them tools if they ever want to getrid off you,

It should be 100% work, most of the companies I've worked for policies against using it for personal reasons or at least thrown against the idea.

Where I'm currently working at the moment, the time and effort we (IT) have to spend because people have used their work e-mails for personal reasons is unbelievable. from spam, viruses to re-opening mail boxes etc.

Don't forget that companies have the right to monitor your emails, so why would you want to use it for personal reasons when hotmail/gmail is free and can be accessible from any device.

They don't have the right to monitor personal email sent via work, unless it is for a criminal matter.

wrong, if your using their email system on their hardware you have no expectation to privacy. it is not your personal email it is the companies email account they are letting you use.

as showing in the email policy you agree to when you get it.

no I'm not... that was kind of my point - everyone is aware of the rules, thus there is no issue with it... you can't be sacked for arranging beers with friends

however if you start a conversation about the strip club on the stag do and make a bunch of derogatory comments... well then you're just asking for it

100% work and gmail is also blocked (I use my phone for that).

This, we are allowed to send personal emails but are supposed to mark them as such. Doesn't seem worth the hassle though, and I'm quite happy to just use Gmail on my phone.
I also have no idea if FOI requests cover personal emails either.
