So for an assignment at college, we've been asked to come up with a site for one of several scenarios. I chose to do one for a design portfolio. We were also asked to base it a round a theme so I chose one I really like. Propaganda.

These aren't finished. Mostly lacking little details and better spacing etc. but they give a fair idea of what I'm doing. What do you think?

The design is great now. The fonts are legible which is good.

As this is for class, are you being graded solely on the design?
If so, you'll do really well I think.

However, if you're also being graded on the code and accessibility, you wouldn't get a passing grade. To get an idea of accessibility, download the web developer toolbar for firefox and use it to disable images and css and see what that leaves you. A correctly done page should still be legible. Yours just shows a blank white page.

Pretty sure it's just the design I'm being marked on. :)

But I'll have a lot of time left when I finish the main bits so I can always improve it.

Thanks for the comments guys.

I'd say its definitely a good starting point but not great like many are saying here.

It looks very flat at the moment, no depth to it and a lot of it seems very plain to me.

Just my personal opinion, it's always nice getting good feedback but remember you want feedback from people that have experience in the field as Joe Bloggs off the street might think it's nice as he's still looking at websites made in the 90's whilst your tutor won't be. He will be critical of the tiny details, that can turn a good design into a great design.

Ok. :)

I see what you mean, thanks. :)

Any tips for adding depth?

Subtle shadows/gradients. It adds depth to an item as well as the entire page. making certain elements stand out from one another and drawing a users attention to a specific element.

Depth has always been the thing that my stuff has lacked. I guess I don't have a good enough understanding of it.

With regards to the portfolio, I was thinking of stylising the thumbnails in the same colours used in the site which would then open up the full original image?

That way, the modern style images won't look out of place.

Good idea or bad idea?
