riight! I spoke to my manager yesterday and he told me that once everyone has claimed their files and folders i should

"allocate the task of cleaning up specific folders to different people in the office, depending on who will know enough about each folder/file to do this."

at the moment everyone and everything is jus dumped on the root directory. so i made a folder called departments and within e.g. admin i put whoever is workign in admin.

then i copied their files over and then emailed them telling them their file has been moved. I also created a public directory for procedure manuals etc and templates.

Just to add some structure to our files and folders on request by my manager but supported by me. Then i showed the MD and he said he wanted it like it was before because at least everyone knows thats xxx file thats xx and where to look. but im sorry only if you're a "special candidate" you would struggle to find the files and folders with the names i gave them.

Now i got to go back and email them and restore the files/folder locations. But i think i'm going to wait for my manager and speak with him. Cant see why you would want everything in root. At the moment i put the management under a folder which ccould be locked. this is surely great news if thats what you're worried about (which is what i think he's thinking).

Sounds like typical managment to me.... one says one thing, then someone else comes along ( always just right after you have finnished the task ) and tells you to put it all back. Then the original guy has a go at you for putting it all back!

I had a similar problem when I started my work, people had things saved randomly all over the servers. I found one that shouldn't really have been seen by staff (as it contained wages and personal detail) and used it as an example of poor file structure and how it could cause some major problems if someone who shouldn't have seen it had got hold of it, printed it, emailed it etc.

security wise dumping stuff in the root is incredibly stupid!

But you dont know that the files arent there for a specific reason. If someone's put a file in the rootdir because it needs to be there for someone, or a script to access it, then you moving it wont help.

Better to ask people to move their own files, as they are the only ones who will be aware of the consequences of doing so.

no scripts are running from that route. its not that advance! its stupid and yes you can see wages and personal pictures and anything at the moment. company revenue etc etc I'm sure that's suppose to be secure.

find out who you work for and answer to him if higher ups have a problem tell them to speak to your boss.

It's called hierarchy and it works well when used.
