Work Rant: Time off for doctors

I also work on a commission basis on top of my basic pay, they've moved the goalposts so instead of receiving an additional £600+ this month, I'm now getting diddly squat.

But anyway, but to the original point. I'm bloody livid and contemplating just jacking it in and looking elsewhere.

Been there mate, lost £800 a few months ago because they changed the bonus structure halfway thru the month. I was FUMING! I was close to walking out, but better to remain civil, do your contracted duty and NO more and look for another job. Easier to get another job if you are currently working.

I am a civil servant and am allocated time off for doctors/dentist/opticians etc and dont need to make the time up. However I always try to make it appointments an 30-45mins before I leave work, that way I get off work for only a short amount of time (and usually home earlier than I normally would be).

It is LAW that your entitled to a break after 4 hours of work though, for 15mins. However I get 1 hour 20mins of break per day in an 8 hours day :o

Also about your overtime, you should request you get paid the overtime (is it time x 1/2 your normal pay?) and have the day you had to have off as holiday your annual leave.

<edit> Personally I would write down a list of things that have been bothering you I.e. The doctors appointment situation, your mum being ill and losing your 18 hours (?) overtime, and your commision, ask to have a meeting with your boss (not line manager) and be very polite, dont get stressed or snotty and just lay it on the table. If your always on time and never leave early say your always punctual and think you have been treated unfairly, mention that fact you're prepared to help out by doing all this overtime and this is how you are repayed. See what he/she says.

This is the first time I've visited the doctors since I've been with my current employer (three years). My appointment was at 09.30 and I actually turned up at work at 08.45 to do some work for 30 mins before setting off - to me this didn't constitute as 'taking my lunch early' as it was so early in the day anyway!

The only break I get all day is 30 min lunch break which doesn't form part of my basic wage. I work damn hard and I think I deserve some credit/leeway if I need to visit the doctors. Plus by the time I got back (11) working through to 17.30 I'm sure I'm entitled to a 20 minute break by law anyway?

In that case, I would agree with you, sounds like you've done everything reasonable.

Do you work as a full-time employee. If you're a contractor or part-timer I think they can get away with treeting you pretty poorly. If I remember correctly full-timers have a number of rights which should prevent this kind of thing.

However if my work treated me that poorly then I'd find work somewhere they have an environment more condusive to my style of employement.

I thought the law changed and contractors had exactly the same rights with regard to sick pay, holiday pay etc.

I know my umbrella co used to sort things like that out for me. I'd check the Dti site.

I'm a full-time employee doing 40 hours per week. I sought permission from my manager to go earlier on the week and was given the all clear. When I came back and all this kicked off this afternoon I wasn't best pleased. My contract stipulates most eventualities such as time off, holiday etc but makes no reference in having time off to attend an appointment.

Thing is, I work in a relatively small organisation (40 people tops) and the MD is tighter than a ducks backside and doesn't trust anybody. Hence the lack of any benefits or sick pay. I didn't even receive the overtime I worked for last month (additional 19 hours) because I had one day off as I had to cart my mum into hospital as she had gastroenteritis.

That sounds exactly like my last job, being made redundant from there was the best thing that ever happened.
