Well technically the media are more right than you. Only in geek circles does the word 'hacker' become a word only to describe super high level system manipulation. In reality, the word 'hacker' just means anyone that has gained unauthorized access (regardless of the method used).

Again, words often mean different things within a corporate environment. Which is what we are talking about here.

I think since someone stuck an infected usb stick into one of the computers at our place it's now sackable offense to even plug one into the machines on the shop floor, and a right royal blocking if you do it on one of the laptops.

We have actually had a contractor removed for that..within an hour of it being reported he was on his way.

Lock down the ports. Warning someone isn't going to do jack after a load of damage is caused by an infected device.

This post shows just how clueless you are. You don't need to log in for a GPO to run, I have several GPOs which will run when the computer is booted up, before the user logs in.

Also, even if you managed to crack the bios password, or reset it, and even if you managed to crack the local admin password, and even if you managed to log in locally and install some software, it still wouldn't help you on my network. All users only get access to the programs and shortcuts that I give them access to, so the moment you log back into the network, you won't be able to access whatever software you just installed. If you try and run something that I don't want you to, I'll know about it. I'll then figure out how you managed to get software installed that I didn't do myself. I'll then make sure you're fired for gross misconduct.

Correct. How did you know? Because of how locked down we have it?

In my experience (my GF is a deputy head) school/council IT departments don't have a clue about computer security, given the fact that 'normal' users have admin privileges and the number of viruses I have had to sort out for my other half! (This isn't limited to one LEA/council)
