work troubles grrr

takes the cake IMO...

perhaps im reacting this way because in my 10 yrs of work experience this is the first time i have encountered it so upfront close and personal...

perhaps it is time for me to move on....i cant work for ppl like that...hell noooo id rather be unemployed for a while...

its a harsh reality, i have to go in when i get this letter from the MD and then either accept being fired or continue working there with a view to getting my backside out of there ASAP as I have previously never this and dont want to at this stage of my career..especially working in a company im kinda using as a stepping stone until i found something better....hmmmm
 
Can I ask what exactly you do? In some jobs it'd be more accepted to challenge how things are done I suppose (I'm thinking creative industries and IT to a certain extent)
 
The other option is of course to leave and find something else. However in my experience of work I don't think you'll ever find a job that allows you to throw your toys out of the pram at the drop of a hat.

so what do you at work? run to management every 2 seconds instead of making a decision yourself? IMHO, they might as well do your job and theirs ...if i threw my toys out so frequently i would have done the first time he was so abrupt and blunt, its like my way of saying, dude you dont know what your doing which i accept and also i know you do, however just say it nicer, pls........

well, i hope your not planning on sponging of my taxes, i'd rather pay for people to be wasting their lives sense-less-ly in iraq, least they are doing what they are told and not being a stuck up prat
 
Just out of interest, how old are you? The things you are saying (and the way you are saying them) makes you sound like a teenager, and if you are actually older, I'm not surprised that your boss doesn't take you seriously.

Regardless of what you think, he is in charge, and that's the way it is. If you have a problem with his ability to do the job, then you should take it up with his immediate boss. Walking out makes you seem like a brat who only cares about their own opinions.

EDIT: There's a major difference between taking a few minutes to calm down and storming off. If you had perhaps done the former, you wouldn't be risking your job, and the MD might have cared about what you had to say.

the OP is 26ish, so almost ten years older than me, but i have a better grip of society, and how to play the game :rolleyes:
 
im an exports control coordinator...(altho permanent job, very temporary in my eyes, because im a buyer, operations manager by trade)

basically this is how it was...

when you fed ex something from UK to JAPAN in this case, fed ex want the invoice to be stamped with country of origin and signed....the items ordered ran across two invoices, so he wanted me to cut out bits from the second invoice with scissors and then photocopy it 3 - 4 times......to which i replied why dont we leave the two invoices inside, because some companies must send 6 - 8 invoices with fed ex they dont do what we do...customs in japan have to take them out of the document wallet fed ex provide to see the country of origin stamp and goods value....something really simple and straight forward....at first he said, "ok if it gets stopped you can pay the charges" "knowing it wouldnt i said thats cool" he replied "actually you will do it my way"....in a very evil way...

that ****ed me off big time...

perhaps cuz i dont really like the job in that one second i thought "sod it" regarding a reference im not that bothered as i can delete it from my C.V. quite easily,

previously we had a meeting when I just started, I made some suggestions to which he replied "I need time to digest your thoughts and then consider how to put them into practice" and thereafter, again he said "I won't budge on this, we are going to do it my way"...I think it was because I said the part time person should not be responsible for responding to web queries as she only works weds, thurs, fri, so as the bulk of enquiries come in over the weekend theres too much of a delay in our response etc etc ....

Then I never said nothing, I just carried on, but friday he ***ed me off big time, so I just walked out and then phoned my MD and he told me "walking out is a big thing" , he would write to me and then give me a "probabtionary review" as I have been there since apr 17th 07...

Where do I stand? what do I do? was I wrong?

Please advise

I do see where your coming from but at the end of the day the manager is there for you to listen to him and do as he says. If you don't like a decision he makes, you know its wrong for example, tuff. You do the job he tells you to do and if it all falls through you won't get the blame it would be him (the manager) for telling you to do it. ;) Stick with been a pleb that way you won't get into trouble for it. But...... the way you handled that will get you into trouble. It's my opinion about it and sorry if it feels harsh but lifes a bitch. :mad:

PS with an attitude from the above post you made I don't think I would ever hire you to do a job I needed doing. Simple because you gotto learn to know whos boss. If you don't like it... find somewhere else!

Honestly, your posts read like they have been written by a teenage girl with PMS. Your story doesn't really make much sense, but from what I think I'm picking up from it, it sounds like your manager had the right idea.

No, but then I'm blessed with a manager that knows how to manage me - i.e. stay out of my way, let me do my job and reap the benefits when his department meet all their targets way in advance of the due date. Managers like that are few and far between, and you have to know how to deal with the ones that aren't like that - you smile, you nod, you do as you're told and let them carry the can when things blow up in their face. You don't storm out and you don't whine about it on an internet forum.

You're missing the point. Management are there to do a couple of jobs:

1) Make unimportant decisions that have no effect on the overall state of play.
2) Ignore suggestions that involve changing procedures unless those suggestions come from a management level above them.....and in that scenario, they won't be suggestions...they'll be orders.

It's the Dilbert Principle. Unlike the Peter Principle, which stated that people are promoted to their level of incompetence, the Dilbert Principle states that people are promoted to the place they can do the least damage - management. And they can't avoid all chance of doing damage if they start taking suggestions from lowly regular employees who have only been there since April 17th....

"Say it nicer"??? He's there to manage, not to be liked.....
 
If you have problems with your boss, there are methods and procedures to complain about things. Walking out is not the best option.

The boss is the boss. They're in charge. You can question them, yes, but they can always pull rank and demand that you do things their way. I think you need to realise that, or you'll run into similar problems again.
 
From what you have said I think that it is just a case of you trying to make life simpler when your boss obviously has his own ways of doing things which he has probably done for years. You haven't been there for long so maybe he has had problems in the past with the invoices doing it your way. Regardless if you think his way is crap or not, he is your manager so you follow his instructions.

Whenever someone is in charge of you, you do what they want, when they want it done and how they want it done. This I find, is the best way to keep my managers and supervisors happy. Although there are tasks/procedures in my job which I think are pointless I do them regardless as it is what I get paid to do. In turn it keeps them off my back and lets them know I am capable of doing the job without their supervision. I'm sure your manager does appreciate suggestions for improvement but due to his experience and position he doesn't have to agree with them.

Walking out in a situation like that seems a very childish thing to do and in reality, whilst working for other people you're not going to get very far if you continue with the same attitude you have now.
 
grow up, stop moaning and whining, he's your manager so he makes the decisions, not you, if you dont like it, hand in your notice, otherwise stfu tbh :)
 
Managers arent meant to be your mates.

My manager called one of my mates a "richard head" so i just told him to shut the **** up and that nobody liked him.

If i dont like something that my manager does then as he says "leave then",simple as that.

I only have a part time job for beer money so i can be cheeky with my manager(5 verbals,1 not so formal written,1 formal written and a formal verbal?)

If customers arent happy then tell THEM to speak to the top management,i wont have a customer shout at me because my manager cant work a rota so if they have an issue take it up with the people at the top thank you.

Managers are ***** end of,my manager is on 2.5 times what standard full time staff are on and comes in late and leaves early....while spending 70% of his day through the back. Same goes for my dads work, £50k a year for doing at least half the work of anybody else.

You had two bits of paper, manager told you to do some photocopying so it ended up on one piece.

You were too lazy to do that and wanted to just put both bits in instead.

He told you to do it the photocopy way and you had a hissyfit and left?

Think its the other way,manager wanted them seperate and he wanted to put them as one......i think.

He probably just wanted to do it his way because the company might/will get charged and he is who will have to answer to his boss and that if it works the way they usually do it then whats the point in changing it.

I think we all wish we had managers with a Laissez-faire management style. My manager is quite autocratic but my assistant manager just sorta leaves the people below him to make decisions for their own department.

I think we can all safely agree that whatever it was, it sure as hell wasn't worth storming out of work in a huff and then bleating on an internet forum about it....
