I have just been moved up to 3rd line at work and as such they have given me a blackberry.

The blackberry is so used, it is 8250 which cost like £80 new. They give me a used one, the buttons are all broken and there is scratches on the back and sides and the device is dirty and well used.

Do you think this is acceptable? what would you do, i cant see why they can't buy me a new one.

It'll be down to cost cutting. Our place gives out used BBs as well, although they have to be functional and not a complete mess!

Buying a new one costs money. The phone is an asset of the company. If it works you're expected to use it. Your standards and expectations may not necessarily be the same as your company's.

If its not fit for purpose then you should say something. However if it just looks abit used then I wouldn't worry about it as its just a work mobile.

I'd ask my line manager for a replacement.

A thread, really?

The battery doesnt even stay in the device because it is so used, when i shake it, it rattles because the metal pins are so worn down. if you take the back off and shake it, the battery comes out.

It still works, but i am thinking of moaning about it

This looks like someone has used it for 5 years.

I look after my companies Blackberry handsets and network, with around 12 handsets (8520) currently in use, we don't necessarily buy brand new kit for employees as long as the current kit works and is of a respectable standard - nicks/chips and scuffs are acceptable.

Bottom line is that your company is under no obligation to provide you with the latest brand new tech.

You already are, unfortunately its to us, who neither care or are able to help.

The amount of effort you put into this thread you could have sent a nice polite email to somebody who matters or even just went and asked in person for a new phone.

If you don't like it, you need to:*
  • move house
  • buy a different car
  • change job
  • dump your girlfriend/wife
  • get rid of your pet
  • other overly simplistic suggestion

*delete as appropriate

So if you take the back cover off and shake it, the battery comes out? Sounds knackered to me.

Take it in to your manager, take off the back cover and vigorously shake the BB until the battery falls off, he'll surely understand then.
