Work wont give me a reference

This is really bad. Basicly a company is taking advantage of you and you mean nothing to them unless you are earning them money. All the people that work really hard to make sure they get a good reference are doing it in vain.

While I've had individuals willing to give a personal reference, I've never known any different from companies, it's always been company to company (i.e. I've not been given it) and it's always been just confirmation of employment and maybe responsibilities.

It's what most companies expect anyway, and they can't ask for references until they're at the point of offering you the job anyway, so a glowing reference shouldn't make any difference over a neutral one, it's only a negative one that would make a difference.

A lot of companies these days won't give a written reference (generally "due" to potential legal issues) they will give a generic one if contacted as you mentioned and thats it my brother had similiar recently where they would only confirm that he'd worked there for the period he stated and had acceptable attendance and thats it.

This - tis fairly standard in a lot of companies these days as a matter of policy.
