I've been looking around the net due to not being able to play non widescreen games in lower resolutions on 22" Sammy 226bw without streching the hell out of it. My nvidia control panel just does not want to use Fixed Aspect Ratio or Centered Output so I can play games, eg @ 1280x1024 with borders. At last I have found a solution for the broken monitor Scaling on Geforce cards, well it works on my 8800gtx anyway with the 162.18 drivers.
This may have been posted before but I thought I'd let people know as it has frustrated the hell out of me and it doesn't look like Nvidia are going to fix it any time soon.
Go to this link and read the instructions but ignore the bit about re-sizing HDTV desktop, download the overscan.zip. Just click on the Enableoverscan.exe, this will place a registry file into your registry and then re-boot. Now All options on monitor scaling work instead of resetting back to default.
Note: this workaround will disable HDCP (high-bandwidth digital content protection) support, which is required for playback of protected HD-DVD and Blu-Ray DVD content over digital interfaces. To disable this workaround and re-enable HDCP support, remove the EnOverscanComp Registry Key by running the DisableOverscanCompensation.exe executable and then rebooting

Just thought I'd let people know this if they want to use scaling, only downside is the disabling of HDCP support but this can easily be rectified by installing the other registery file.
