Workaround: FreeSync on nVidia GPUs

They are anything but crap, it's talk like that which is the reason that people say AMD's drivers are crap!

Pretty sure Iv'e already said that Nv has 'Whisper Mode' on their laptops that provide a cap, as I don't have GFE installed in my ROG laptop, I googled a whisper mode screenshot:

Their laptop G-Sync is great too imo, nothing wrong with it, it works as advertised=no screen tearing capped at whatever fps you want!

Do you have M graphic card? Because my laptop has full blown chip and there is no option for Whisper mode.

No it's full fat 1060, you need to install driver, in GeForce Experience>Enable Whisper Mode, then NCP for framte rate control as in picture I posted.

isn't it a bit odd that the option isn't there to begin with and that the user is forced to go through another app just to get basic functionality in the control panel?

It is a bit odd - they introduced the framerate control slider in one release and immediately removed it again citing it was better to use 3rd party tools (which isn't necessarily the case especially as the driver level one can work in a different way potentially) but it along with several other useful features is there still locked behind developer functionality.

@Phixsator, yes agreed, but as @Rroff stated, it's there if you want it, after you switch it on in GFE, that's it, you only access frame rate control via ncp then on in.

I have no use for GFE and i dont want GFE. I want the basic driver and i would like a control panel with actual control of said driver. When a company makes it difficult for me to adjust basic functions then i get annoyed with said company. Ohh and btw while we are on the subject of missing/hidden features, where is my tesselation controls in my ncp?

Yup, function over form, sadly AMD stopped making the more usable "Control Centre" ones once when they switched over to that Adrenaline **** :(
Actually they switched to Crimson, and the switch was very rocky because they removed a bunch of features in the process. I avoided it for a few months but they've since added a lot more features, including per-game FreeSync settings and ReLive. I am not sure if there's any features that are still missing from the old CCC days but thankfully all the ones I need are there.

nVidia's Control Panel looks like crap and I wouldn't even say it's that functional. On the same "missing features" track, I have an nVidia card in my HTPC and certain useful settings like colour depth and black levels have been in inconsistent places or flat-out missing for years. It's better now but still, it was never great.

Fuction over form. Amd's panel is just about idiot proof and has just about all the tools you would ever need built in. It also looks good as a plus.
Looking pretty and being functional aren't the same thing, they took a simple to use tool and made it more laborious to use due to looking like a flash website from 2001 lol.

Idiot proof, yeah right, If only that was the case.

Take a look at the Wattman interface for example.

And don't forget the footnote on the AMD radeon wattman page.

Footnotes
  1. Overclocking any AMD processor, including without limitation, altering clock frequencies / multipliers or memory timing / voltage, to operate beyond their stock specifications will void any applicable AMD product warranty, even when such overclocking is enabled via AMD hardware and/or software. This may also void warranties offered by the system manufacturer or retailer. Users assume all risks and liabilities that may arise out of overclocking AMD processors, including, without limitation, failure of or damage to hardware, reduced system performance and/or data loss, corruption or vulnerability. GD-106

So basically make it look flashy and give lots of options to change, but invalidate the warrenty if you actually use any of them, yes very idiot proof .

Tough, you obviously don't need it that much, looks like tesselation controls not going to happen-as they'd lose a bit of control when they want you to upgrade.
But there is always AMD if you aren't happy in the Nv eco system.

One thing to add. Since july the AMD drivers are coming with an ingame control panel, to activate freesync, change colours, set the GPU overlay and what ever values you want in it... While gaming.
Hopefully they would add the wattman overclocking stuff.

I see no Wattman interface there and it's easy enough to use. It's always been the case that if you bork your card overclocking then you invalidate your warrenty but how could they tell in the first place.

Are you saying that Wattman isn't part of the AMD driver suite, or is it you just cannot find it?

I was reffering to your spoiler tag with a benchmark inside which i thought was meant to contain a Wattman image. I use wattman with my Vega and find it easy enough to use. No need for afterburner anymore as wattman does the job just fine.
