Just wondering when i start my new part-time job earning roughly£6000 a year, will this be taxed? Or is there some sort of threshhold before you begin to get taxed? Thanks :)

I think you will definitely be taxed... maybe an emergency tax?

I think the threshold is £40... Oh... Donuts!

As said above there is a tax threshold, however you may end up paying emergency tax for a while if you do just talk to your employer and they'll sort it out for you.

You may pay national insurance of ~£20 a month aswell

I sure wasn't taxed on those wages. You also have to earn a certain amount before they can tax you. Probably about one years salary.

It all depends if you earn it equally over the year.

You have a tax free allowance of £6475 per annum (average person).

If you earn over about £125 a week, you'll get taxed, but you'll get it back at the end of the year.
If you earn less than that, you won't get taxed.

Same with National Insurance - anything under the employees Earning Threshold (ET) at £110 per week, and you won't attract NI deductions

If you're earning your £6000 over a
small time period there's a form you can fill out so you don't get taxed, as long as you don't earn more thanthe personal allowance threshold.

This is the right answer!!!!!

(Before everybody comes in with their own crazy tax advice) :p

Thats weird... I was just looking into this... as I got taxed and shouldn't've. I want my £86 back! (tbh I can wait till April for them to sort it out)

they will find a way to take your money...

oh they will tax you.

you can be sure of that.

Nice, constructive posts Groen.

You are below the tax threshold and should be OK, you shouldn't really pay too much tax ever unless your wage drops really, as tax is worked out pro rata.
But if you want me to tell you exactly what your position is, just mail me your details. My wife is head of the wages office of a national builders, so I'm sure she'll know ten times better than me or us. :D
