Hi all,

Just wondered, if any of you who normally work in the office, and have to go and work away for periods of time, do you get extra payments? Or is it classed as normal work?

I'm a bit annoyed at the moment, and I've already had to spend 2 weeks away from home, and have been asked to do another 1, possibly 2 weeks away.

If I was single, it wouldn't be a problem personally, but I'm married with 2 kids so it's a big disruption to the family.

I understand it needs to be done for the business, but feels like all take on their part.

Cheers

I work away a lot and your employer should be providing an allowance for meals etc at least and some will pay you some type of premium for being away others wont. They can however legally pay you £5 a day for incidental expenses which is not taxable.

Normally just get expenses covered

Speak to boss about it if travel wasnt in your job description you shouldn't be forced to work away for long periods if these are just one offs just suck it up

I travel for a few nights at a time but get a generous expenses allowance and stay at some high end hotels (which I frequently get upgraded in). Yes it's not nice being away from home and you use a ridiculous amount of time but I have learnt to adapt and it's good for my career.

I'd suck it up if it was just a few times, if it started becoming more regular I'd have a word with the boss and come to an arrangement however.

At least you didn't get sent to work in Saudi for 3 weeks during Ramadan.

I get an overnight allowance per day which gets added to my payslip at the end of the month, on top of being paid travelling time, and then being paid and advance for accomodation and food/drink.

Just got back from 2.5 weeks in Houston last week and I'm going to Tunis for 5 days this month ...

We get paid a "per diem" rate to cover food, if you have any extra though i.e. don't spend it all you don't need to pay it back in.

So "technically" yes.

I also got a pay rise for taking the role with more travelling.

I just get hotel and expenses which used to be good but nowadays are really tight, If I travle down on a Sunday or am late back on the Friday I claim overtime to cover the travel, I used to let that go when the expenses were more reasonable

We get £70 allowance for hotel, £17 for evening meal, £7.50 for breakfast and £5 for lunch. Anything inside the M25 is higher allowance. Not too shabby to be honest considering what some companies get!

Depends though, up here unless your in Aberdeen in which case similarly to London we get an increased allowance those allowances are pretty decent and same in North England. Some companies we work with give their staff £25 to find a place to stay and £10 total for food.

Never heard of anyone being paid more, normally only expenses.
