hey all,, just after some advice,

i have been interested in building my own pc's for a while, i enjoy building them and tinkering around.
if i was to go for a job doing this, would i need qualifications? or is there any courses i can go on or would i be better researching on the net? any links would be good! i know the basics but would like to know more about it all.

thanks in advance

Ginge :)

You would most probably need experience over qualifications, but they would help.

Also there's not many jobs around for people just building PC's. You would be better off pursuing a career in the software side of things IMO.

You could get a job in the Dell factory?

I doubt there is many jobs doing this, most PCs bought by big companies are bought in bulk.

Plus its hardly a major skill, you get a manual with it on how to do it.

The pure act of building the computers would be a side job to another role such as support and testing I would guess. Some form of assistant technician job with a computer firm would cover it I reckon. As for qualifications, a steady hand and willingness to work?

This is just an assumption, i'm sure somebody in the business knows better.

thanks guys, lol i dont think i was clear :) yours sounds about rite jack lol, somthing similar to what ocuk offer where you can get a system built and overclocked that sort of thing

Here's a thread from but three days ago on this very topic. Essentially building PCs is not particularly skilled work, if you can build a Lego model then you can build a PC, it might be a way into computer retail if that's what you want to do but as a computer builder your prospects are likely to be fairly limited.

yea i can already build them, just wanting more info of how it all works lol if you know what i mean

How it all works? You mean at the stage of I/O processes, how the memory interfaces with the motherboard and CPU sort of level or how software interacts with hardware? If so then you probably want a qualification in either computing or electical engineering as depending on which direction you want to take it in.

In terms of qualifications to build a PC, there aren't really any or perhaps I should say nothing that makes you a better builder than someone who has never taken a qualification course.

i think im going to change my mind about this lol i liked it as a hobby any way lol thanks for all your replies!

I've done it as a hobby for years now.The negative aspect of it is people can sometimes expect support 24/7 for silly software issues.People still ring me years after building expecting me to fix problems.I now only do it for close friends and family.

Besides,I can't compete with the big box shifters on price any more so I normally advise people to go to them rather than me.
