Does anyone do this full time, be it remotely or started their own small business with the technology age that we have now?

Google is full of dodgy websites and advice, so thought I'd see what people do here?

I know my brother works for Cisco, he works full time in his converted garage, but obviously thats after many years of working there and reaching the top of his role.

I'm not in that position, had to give up my full time job because of my health and I'm just wondering how I can earn a small income from home.

Buying / Selling on the 'bay seems to be what a lot of articles suggest, some say blogs although I'm not good at writing?

I have done a lot of selling, dvds/games/gadgets etc on the 'bay but thats stuff I've had and no longer wanted, how I can turn that into a mini-business I have no real idea to be honest.

Any suggestions / advice?

I am lucky enough to work from home in my job. I administer servers for several small businesses, and the majority of my workload can be done remotely. It is no less stressful/annoying than being there in person. Though I do have to make trips to the clients fairly regularly too - some problems you just have to be there to fix! :)

Yeah, i would like that - would drive me insane being at home all day and every day, sometimes you have to get out and see people.

Oh yeah, sometimes I hope something falls over far enough for me to make a visit! :p

As with anything it has its perks and downsides.

Website design? Gotta be pretty damn good or at least manage to get some small local businesses onboard to build up a portfolio.

Work for a charity? Pay isn't going to be amazing but if you can find one who are hiring techies you could work from home, its all part of keeping their costs down. You'd probably spend a lot of time on charity sites however in addition to the remote support which may not be what you're looking for.

Become a master of the stock markets and trade from home? Amateur pr0n star? lol.

Hmm its a good question I wish I worked from home, you either need to be god like at something or happy with a low wage. AQA or Edexel exam boards have markers that work from home, guess that'd be low paid however.

Well I am starting some home learning for Apple exams, already have one but nothing ever came from it. Ideally I'd like to be a remote mac support guy, but then if I was needed outside it would be difficult for me to get about.

Thats all a pipe dream at the moment, I have to get better physically first but its a start.

I guess I could buy low sell high on that site, although what is the question! :p

I've got a second income whereby small local companies post me boxes of their receipts and bank statements and I prepare their accounts and corp tax returns, but it took a while to get the relationships required and it literally is a drop in the ocean compared to my main income. If I was looking to work exclusively from home I'd answer job adverts that specified it, i.e. legal work such as typing up court recordings, translations, web design, data entry...

I'd say, play to your strengths, so e.g. if you know a lot about mac hardware, buy/sell that. Or if you're good at graphic design or programming then sell your work.

Web design for local businesses is quite easy. There are the html snobs out there but most small local businesses don't want overly complicated websites. I did loads when I was self employed, sort of stuff that would get spat on here, but the businesses were dead happy with it.

Home IT support £25/hr or more.

Buy/sell on eBay must be pretty easy. House clearances and sell on anything of value. The rest goes to the dump. You even charge to clear the house.

Envelope stuffing seems to be popular if you can stomach it.

Dog walking also popular and people will pay inordinate amounts to get fifi walked during the day.

All of this is just leaflets away from earning you some money. Cheap leaflets from Good Time Printing: http://www.ikent.co.uk/profile/346585/Ashford/Goodtime-Print-and-Design-Ltd/

Everytime I think about working at home - first I think about how awesome it would be - and then I think about how much work wouldn't get done :p

To explain what I mean... here's Mitchell & Webb :p:

Looked at part time things a few times. Only real option I found was deliverying catalogues. But know I have somewhere to store them I can't see any advertises.

Aren't all enevelope ones just a big scam. Why pay someone when machines are so cheap.

If it was that easy dont you think we'd all be sat at home rather than going to work every day?

He is asking how to make a small income at home which is perfectly plausable, many do it.

Jonny has actually got some good ideas!

Don't see the issue tbh.

I'm pretty sure the woman across the road for me works from home. I see quite a few differn't cars outside her house and the only lights ever on are her bedroom. If you want i can get some tips from her?
