Working in Jersey

Up to 20% income tax. Remove relief, if you have any.

Social Security is 6% of income.

GST at 5% on everything bought locally. 5% GST on any imports over the value of £240.

No company tax, companies are also exempt from GST.

What industry - guessing IT?

What housing and relocation package (its expensive)?

Have you been there before, its awesome but not for everyone.

Thanks. Been offered an interview for a good role over there so I'm weighing up whether moving over is worth it.

It's not tax you should be concerned about, its general living expenses and rent etc :) Can be quite high as a result of the obviously finite supply of stuff.

Jersey wages are high compared to a very large % of the UK.

Tax is Tax, we are not taxed abnormally high here, have 5% GST instead of VAT and social is not a killer (Large % is paid by employer, rest is paid by you)

Cost of living is higher but depending on your personal circumstances I don't imagine you will be worse off, not unless you are taking a pay cut. If anything housing will be your main issue with regards to costs unless you get housing qualifications through your work or because you were born here. Even with qualifications housing is pretty expensive anyway so rather than look into taxation I suggest you look into accommodation.

The other outgoing will be parish rates, differs from parish to parish and the land your own/occupy. Think of it as council tax. It's not crippling though.

Leccy/Gas is pretty expensive compared to UK, just another factor of living costs though.

Out of curiosity What company/sector? Contracted or worked in many big corporates, which I imagine is what is bringing people in from UK.

Just think, can order from OcUK VAT free :D

Thanks for the info. I've no idea about anything to do with Jersey, only really thought I ought to look into it when I got a call this evening asking if I can do an interview. Yes, it's in the IT sector, permanent and not contracting.

Not forgetting internet costs - which are stupidly expensive for rubbish speeds!

As Sin_Chase says, housing is the by far and away the largest cost of living here so unless your employer is providing that for you have a good look around at some websites like www.redproperties.je and www.slomans.co.uk. Unless you are given a J-cat (a type of employment license that allows you to rent certain properties) you will be looking for accommodation that is marked as "non-qualified" for which you will pay a premium over the already inflated prices.

Peculiarly, you tend to find that the cost of essentials - food, milk, housing, utilities - is more expensive here than the UK whereas luxury goods are cheaper.

Internet is more expensive generally but it's not that bad.

2Mbit unlimited usage for ~£17/Month is not the cheapest but it's not dire either. 1Gbit fibre being rolled out also so fastest net in British Isles to residential addresses.

I had someone after me for a job there but the living costs (mainly housing) meant it was a no go really. Pity as could have been fun :)

Well at least now I'm armed with more for the interview. I can get some pretty decent rates (contracting) in England so it'd have to be something spectacular to tempt me over there with housing the price it is! Thanks all.

It's just I hate Newtel but am stuck with them due to the "unlimitedness".

Fairly decent income tax explanation here. Basically, there are two methods of calculation and you pay the lower one.

Probably a little inappropriate, but feel free to say who it is you could be working for (either publicly or by trust) to get an opinion about them as an employer. Jersey is a VERY small place meaning there is a fairly high likelihood that one of the beans on here will know them!

Sorry but it's confidential.
