Currently i work for a few different agencies doing work from finance to I.T to Admin depending on what i can get, just recently ive stated that i want to cut my hours back to between 20 and 30 hour and this has been greated by a look of abject horror on the faces of those agencies that keep me employed.

i dont understand why its so hard for people to comprehend the fact that i dont want to spend most of my waking hours working, im not a huge fan of money, i dont care for flashy objects and trinkets, i just want more time to spend at home and with my friends, maybe take up a college course ect.

i just get this feeling that these people think that if im not willing to give all of my free time in the persuit of money over hapiness and personal improvement then i must be some form of freak...

as if to say, how dare i not want a career...

I know exactly how you feel. I dont want to spend the rest of my life working all day everyday and have no time to do anything else. I take things step by step, at my own pace and a lot of people try to push me to move ahead faster. I say stick to what you want to do and how you want to live your life. Its because of other people that I suffer from anxiety.

Less work, less money = a simpler life but maybe a more enjoyable life for those who like it that way.

It's probably more the fact, that you're working for them, and cutting your time in work, is going to lower your productivity. Something no employer wants.

dont blame you. if you dont need the money then why work so hard. obviously you need to think of your future, but the college course is covering that anyway. plus you could get hit by a bus tommorow  ;) :)

Are you still living at home? I mean, what financial responsibilities do you have?

I think the reason that most people may react with horror is that other people have financial responsibilities such as a mortage, car, kids, girlfriends etc. These things are impossible to pay for on a part time wage.

At the moment you can work as little as you wish, but as the financial responsibilities grow it will soon become necessary to pursue that career, work full time, etc.

Its just because its more work for them...

Much easier for them to find you a fulltime job and just place you there, than to find you several jobs...

I never will have kids, I dont want a car (might be getting a motorbike but thats it), I never will be able to afford a morgage on a flat and given the shockingly stupid price of everything i doubt id want to, although i am still interested in buying a canal boat (which is a hugely cheaper option) but im waiting for WiMax or something similar to become available.

hence i never will have need for stock piles of cash :)

p.s. if my partners only interested in my money then i really wouldnt want to know them...

if I didn't work full time, I couldn't afford to live and enjoy life the way I do.

rent bills food petrol blah blah come to about £700 a month for me.

£700 a month is more than do able on 30 hours a week. ;)

As long as you don't scrounge off the dole whilst you're perfectly fit to work, like a lot of people, the you should do as you wish. If you earn enough to survive with a part time job then I can't see anything wrong with that. Happiness always comes first.

there are probably a couple of other reasons why they don't like it. if you think about it, the less you work for them, the less money they'll be earning and also it may be harder for them to find work for someone that is only wanting to work 3 or 4 days a week.

they could just be jealous though. i mean, who wouldn't want to spend half the week not working!! :)

as long as you dont scrounge off the state or evade tax, go for it - do what you like. but don't think you can live at home for the rest of your life :p

Funny thing is everyone sees it as the right thing to do by moving out of your house. Ofcourse I feel thats appropriate aswell but in certain circumstances its not.

Was having a very similar conversation while on holiday last week.

Why is it that more and more (especially if you work for a large company) you are looked at with disgust if your in on time and leave on time? They expect you to be here 30 mins before your due to start and stay as long as possible.

I'm sorry but if you pay me to be here between 9 - 5 then thats what I will do, if you want me to stay longer then you pay me over time.

I work to live not live to work.

You're right, i dont spend a lot of money, so would much prefer to work less and enjoy myself more, i do not want a career.

I currently work about 10-15 hours a week and bring in about £11K self employed. I've been doing that for the last 3 or so years and I've got to say I'm the most relaxed now as I've ever been in my life. While I'm ready to start a new career now (I'm 28) I don't regret doing what I've done at all. I've had oodles of spare time to do all my hobbies, built some wild stuff in the garage, did up a classic car, knocked about on a Vespa and still covered the bills.

Do what you feel like, you won't get another chance. If later on you feel like changing then go ahead and do so, but you won't have to say you regret not trying out. I'm going to miss my spare time, the late nights, the bumming around in my pants when I feel like it, the flexibility, knowing all the neighbours, grabbing all the reduced bargains during the day in the supermarket... the list can go on forever. Work isn't everything!

I only work part time at the moment myself. I do between 18 and 25 hours a week but my hourly rate is enough to provide what I need. Due to some complicated reasons I'm actually better of this way at the moment, but I intend to retrain and go back to full time later this year.

I'm not materialistic and having a good career has never been one of my priorities but the rat race is there to be run and you'll be better off in the long run if you put the hours in while you still can.
