Working offshore.

Yeah that's the oil companies themselves that are putting the deadline at the...Opito's deadline is something like January the 6th. meaning that the course centers don't have to put it in the BOSIET yet and instead offer it as an extra course. We got the spiel today that " its because the industry are still using the old re-breathers, therefore we train you on that", when it is just a way of extra cash tbh.

It's only 90 minute course so could have easily been tagged on the BOSIET somewhere. but nope costs you £70-£100.

Seems a bit of a scam having to get safety certificates for a job you don't yet possess. I imagine they expire within a relatively short time also?

I think what's happening is that from the first, flights will start using the new system, but because of the numbers required, some flights will still be using the old style rebreather and they will get slowly phased out towards the end of the year as more units are manufactured. So between now and then you need to know how to operate both systems.

The likes of Norwich and Scasta are bringing them in quicker presumably because the number of flights are so much less.

Ahh that's a really good point actually. It was just what they had told us, however with it being in the NE they presumably cater for predominately Aberdeen workers.

Nah, BOSIET and MIST last for 4 years before you have to refresh.

Yeah Norwich flights are switching to the newer systems fairly quickly. All the OPITO trainees down this way have already been on the new course, so they must be planning to switch over to it completely fairly soon.

Annoying that OPITO haven't bothered to stick me on it though, or at least as a very low priority, because I'm based onshore now - I don't want to have to fork out for it in two years time, I have little intention of staying onshore once qualified!

Well if you get a nice company out there, they may well pay to stick you on the new EBS refresher!

Some operators have put in place their own deadlines for this month, so as to ensure those away for 3 or so weeks can be traind for when thwy return back to the beach.
