Working out number combinations?

Not true. You can have 3 identical numbers if you want. It may not be wise but there are no restrictions.

Can you have 4 though. I didn't really read through the signing up documents but I know it said no series of numbers and repeated ones for a PIN. (Natwest btw if it matters.)

lotterys worked out by 48x47x46x45x44 isn't it? as you've got 1-49 and have one less per choise.
unless you count the bonus ball in wich case its 48x47x46x45x44x43 but I don't think that works.

That's the probability of matching the jackpot numbers.

The probability of winning needs to include other factors, such as what constitutes winning.

The expected value of winning (how much you can reasonably expect to win for every pound played, for example) needs to include factors such as number of players, the distribution of prizes, rollovers etc...

IIRC the expected value of £1 played is 40p

It's not even close, with those kinds of odds if everyone in the uk played the lottery wednesday and saturday there would be a jackpot winner on average once every 2 years!

Heh - I didn't actually look at the number - I read it as 13 million or so, rather than 13 billion.

You're correct, of course - The true number is around the 14 million mark.
