Working out which phone to get next

Right then, nearly new phone time.

I used to be really into my phones, but in recent years I've taken less interest. I had an iPhone 3G and 3GS which I loved, but in honesty I can't justify the iPhone costs anymore as I need to get as many pennies as possible into the house deposit fund.

My current phone is a HTC Wildfire which I've had on a 2 year contract. The contract is fine, but the phone is beyond shocking. Easily the worst phone I have ever had. I appreciate it was bottom of the range, but I'm not convinced of the quality of android. Other Android phones havn't impressed me.

I loved how the iPhones just worked, and things like Dropbox + Runkeeper are key to me. I'll accept moving away from them if suitable alternate services which are truely comparable exist on the other devices.

I'm quite impressed with the look of the new Nokia Lumia phones, Nokia were always good at getting a great handset, and getting someone else to do the software seems to have worked for them.

The 700 looks pretty decent as an entry level phone, but I want to know if updates will be forthcoming when new functionality appears. Will new WM marketplace apps be coming in the likes of Dropbox + Runkeeper or will I have to move to new software?

Ideally I want a free phone/very cheap, don't mind how long the contract is, ideally on Orange as I make a lot of use of the magic numbers. As a result of magic numbers my current 300 minutes is more than enough. I have unlimited texts (no idea how many I use) and 500MB data is a minimum. I need to be able to set up a wifi hotspot for my laptop to connect into.

So, answers on a postcard, what do you recommend?

I'd say the 710 is a good choice.

Windows Phone is far more like the iPhone than Android, so you'll get on well with that. It does currently lack quite a few apps but you can be sure that Microsoft will get all the big ones over sooner rather than later.

It has a thread here - http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18372675

Good deals here - http://www.buymobilephones.net/mobile-phones/Nokia/Nokia-Lumia-710/8,89945,All,tt1,ct1

And the 800 is fairly cheap here too - http://www.buymobilephones.net/mobile-phones/Nokia/Nokia-Lumia-800-Cyan/8,95604,All,tt1,ct1

This is my worry.

The last thing I want to do is get the phone, a new major update come out, and be stuck without it when all the new apps come out.

Well, the apps will probably all still work regardless of the update or not.

You'll just be missing any updated functionality in the OS itself.

Surely the Lumia 800 will definitely get the update as it's the current flagship? Go for one of those instead, they aren't much more expensive.

I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't.

Considering the efforts Microsoft are putting into stopping the platform becoming fragmented like android, I would be highly surprised if the 710 didn't get the major updates for the foreseeable future.

Edit: the 800 and the 710 Both have the same ram and CPU/chipset, so there is NO reason for it not to get the same updates.

So yeah, go for the 710. I'm very confident it will get the same updates from Microsoft as the 800.

Well from info that has been leaked onto the internet so far it looks like the Windows Phone 8 phones will have dual core processors. So it may be a requirement of the OS.

As we know the 610/710/800/900 do not have dual core processors.

And this is why I like Apple stuff :(

I don't want to buy something which half way through the contract will be less than useless. Are there any dual core windows phones available currently?

No, not yet.

Why does it not having the very latest updates make it less than useless? It won't be radically different.

Yep, there's been a few job postings testing old WP7 code on the new W8 kernel (possibly :p)

You might not get the full WP8 update but all the major apps will be fine.

It adds support for multi core and different resolution. Nothing states it's a minimum.

I just don't like the idea of support issues coming up that won't get fixed. Look at the 3GS, it's been out for years and still gets all the updates (well, lets see what happens with the next updates!)

Umm yes they do, they release version of iOS that doesnt have all the working features on older models...even though they have been shown to run just fine on them.

I wouldnt worry to much, because ANY phone you buy now is kinda going to be like that with updates.

I guess I just feel 'burnt' as the wildfire has been so disappointing.

I've noticed some of the Lumia models get skydrive access (25GB!!) That sounds pretty tasty to me !

I'll see if the Lumia 900 is available when I come to upgrade, if not, the 800 looks decent.

The likelihood of all the upcoming updates coming to the Lumia is pretty high, so I wouldnt worry to much, and even then for w8, we are not talking till about December sometime..if even that.

I'd give Android another chance - maybe with a custom ROM.

My problem is, I have to deal with IT **** at work, I want something at home that just... works. Hence me having replaced all my windows kit and homebrew HTPC's etc with Apple kit.

I think the Lumia looks pretty decent actually reading up more, I'll have good read of the threads.
