Working out which phone to get next

I just prefer the 'feel' of the 800. The screen feels a little smoother and the device is more comfortable to hold due to the size.

The only benefits of the 900 as far as I can see is the bigger screen and front facing camera. Apart from that they are identical.

Also:

I just don't like the idea of support issues coming up that won't get fixed.

I'm sure if there were issues with WP7.5 that they would fix them. It's not as if they are just going to drop support for it all together is it?

Just looking into it further. It looks like the 800 has a few nice features over the 710 (AMOLED Screen for one) but the 900 does appear to have different CPU setup to the 800 (Qualcomm MSM8255 (WCDMA) Vs Qualcomm APQ8055 + MDM9200 (WCDMA)). I quite like the idea of the 900 for the front camera for skype...

Knowing how long it takes Microsoft to do anything it might not be here for ages.
Or the beta was released a week ago.
, Windows Phone is getting its very own Skype app -- at least, a beta version. Compatible devices include the Nokia Lumia 710, Lumia 800, HTC Titan, Radar, Samsung Focus S and Focus Flash. A spokesperson has told us that the app will be available on most devices running Windows Phone 7.5 and above. This early version will allow free audio and video calls over WiFi or 3G, alongside those any-number paid-for calls. There's a brief video overview right after the break and the beta's available to download now.

You can't afford a iphone, but you can afford a lumia? Seems odd. Surely you could get an iphone 4 (not the 4s), and be OK ?

iPhone 4.

It'll play well with all your home kit and be so much easier to live with. Everything will just work and you'll have a blessed existence not spent faffing with your phone

You can get a 16GB 4S for £30-32 per month with a free phone, just so you are aware, look here:

Generally, if you really want an iPhone, you should get an iPhone. The monthly difference is fairly small. The 8GB iPhone 4 will be slightly cheaper but the 4S is easily worth the extra. Check on the above sites for that too. :)

Just off a quick check on e2save, so accept there is more that could be done elsewhere

A Lumia 710 can be had on contracts as cheap as £18.73 PCM over 2 years (400 mins, ultd texts, 750MB)

A Lumia 800 can be had on contracts as cheap as £20.12PCM over 2 years (400 mins, ultd texts, 750MB)

An iphone 4 8GB contract I've found over 2 years is £36 PCM (300 mins, 1gb internet, ultd texts

So TCO is

Lumia 710 - £449.52
Lumia 800 - £482.88
iPhone 4 8GB - £864

So.... quite a difference.

Yes, there are cheaper iPhone 4s contracts with other networks, but the minutes balance is too low. I can cope with such a low minutes on Orange as I use magic numbers to make up the shortfall.

So, not so odd at all... just maths ;)

However, if there are any genius ways to get an iPhone 4/4S for comparable price, I'm all ears.

The 8GB iPhone 4 can be had for around £400 SIM free? Then just find a decent SIM, for example Orange even do a £7 a month SIM only deal with 150 mins, 500 text and 250MB. TCO over 2yrs around £570.

An update.

You might have seen in the Lumia 800 thread I might be able to get a cheap nearly new handset from someone at work.

Just got off the phone to Orange. Currently I pay for 300 Minutes, 500MB data and ultd texts with my Wildfire.

I've been offered a free Lumia 800, 900 minutes, 1GB data, Ultd texts for £23 per month. If I take this out in a shop with my Govt Discount they can do it for £19.

That to me seems pretty reasonable !
