Working outside your normal duties

I will do almost anything provided there is sufficient reason why I should be doing it, rather than someone else. Things like cleaning almost never come up, so we can ignore them, but I'll do pretty much anything that's asked.

That may be because the company I work for and the people around me are all reasonable and don't make stupid requests, which does (or should) make you more amenable on the rare occasions when requests are made.

So are you a jobsworth blinker wearing sheep that clocks in at 8.59am and is running for the door at 5.29pm, bleating "that's not in my contract" during the day, or do you actually try and be part of a team and further the business you are in?

That view is equally as blinkered. I'm an aircraft engineer, I'm paid to fix call outs and do scheduled and unscheduled maintenance and get the aircraft out asap.

If I go on an aircraft and someone has (as they regularly do) soil themselves or throw up all over three seats. I do a 180 and **** off until someone else has cleaned it up. Would the aircraft go quicker if I stuck my gloves on and cleaned up poo. Without doubt.

Don't give me this jobsworth crap because you make a cup or tea of sweep the floor.

BTW I don't make the tea either, I don't drink hot drinks or waste time drinking one like a work shy slacker. ;)

I reckon I do 6 hours a week on top of what I invoice my employer for. No extra duties, just wanting to get the job done properly. It is losing me a considerable amount of income over the course of a month, but I want to do a bit more so hopefully they might extend my contract. :)

I'm happy to do jobs that are 'below' me at work - as long as it isn't someone else's job to do! I refuse to drive stores to site for projects I'm working on, because that is the job of the stores department. They are incredible inefficient and need shaken up. If I take things out in my car (talking about water pumps, portable generators etc) and make everything look as if it's OK then nothing will change.

I do whatever is needed to get the objective of the company done. (yes I am sad) But I actually like my job

Not at all, given that they fund your life I think it's great that you take a vested interest in them achieving their goals.

My own situation is the same as Dolph's.

Well in my Job they are short of about 8 people so they are making us take on the extra work instead of hiring more guy's.

Lately ive been coming home from work so exhausted that I have been having 3 or 4 straight vodka shots just to feel Human and relax.

I voiced my concerns to a colleague and it got back to my manager. She had me in the office today and was very sympathetic yet told me I need to persevere in these economic times and not to drink cheap **** vodka but just the expensive good stuff !

I left our little chat feeling rejuvenated and all my ill feeling temporarily evaporated. I'm sure she's Hitler re-incarnated.

I feel like Guderian.:(

I do a little extra but I don't bust myself up for them, no. Why should I be doing other people's jobs? Especially jobs that someone who would be getting paid significantly more than me should have done/be doing.
