World Cup Hype

I'm a Scot living in London, and in the build up to every previous World Cup, there has been way more hype in London, from numerous cars with St. George's flags (and other nations), and football tops coming out in abundance.

This year seems very subdued around here, and it's almost feels like there is no World Cup happening.

Is this just a London thing, or do football fans around here prefer to follow their club teams?

I have not seen a single housewife with flags attached to the top of the car this world cup.

I think in the previous cups a lot of folk thought we could win it and this time round no one does...

I am also a Scot living in the South of England and there is definitely a lot less enthusiasm for the tournament and England's chances this time round. I am hardly seeing any of the St Georges flags around the place compared with the last Euro's or South Africa. I don't know why that's the case. Perhaps people are saving it for when Andy Murray starts his defence of the Wimbledon title?

If we were in it, we would celebrate it even if we lost every game. I would have thought people would support their team no matter what, it's a shame if for most people that they are "glory hunting"!

However, in an opposite way, maybe it's best that there is a lack of over optimism, and will relieve a lot of pressure off the team.

We've seen nothing in recent friendlies to give us any hope (or at least most of us haven't :p), couple that with a tough group... in a way it's good because the players will be under less pressure than usual.

TBH I can't wait for the World Cup to be over and the new season started, our domestic season is far more interesting than the Euro/WC circuses.

People can't afford the free flags and they know it will end on the 24th so they’re not bothering so much this time around……

Wait until the Italy game, if England beat them then I'm sure everyone will become a lot more optimistic and into it. I would be a bit more psyched but for the fact I've got exams up until the 17th :(
