Worldwide console sales

Sure 3DS and other projects are sucking the cash from Nintendo's pockets but I shudder to think how much they have wasted on those pointless so called celebrity adds on the TV.

Those adverts bring in substantially more money than they cost to make. It's all about influence and awareness. That is the whole point of advertising.

Because I had one for almost a year and only Twilight Princess and Paper Mario were worth playing. Nintendo have lost all creativity IMO. It's the same IPs over and over.

I agree, there is the odd good game on there but I am so fed up of having hundreds of Mario games, why not try something new for a change? Well because all the fanboys wouldn't buy it :(

I totally agree with this, there is an absolute dearth of unique content and the only decent games on the Wii/DS happen to be first party games which to be fair often end up being the best in the biz - but you can only have so many Metroid/Zelda/Mario games!

Wasn;t Nintendo's loss a write down on the value of foreign currency (i.e. dollars) that they hold?

The thing that stands out to me is that despite the year-long head start and a much more generous launch pricing and lineup, the 360 has only sold 3.6 million more than the PS3 so far!

Not to mention the average person having bought 3 or more due to failures. :p

Think you missed my point I didn't say advertising is a waste of time I said I shudder to think how much they have wasted on those celebrity adds, when arguably they could have done the same adds minus the celebritys with a similar impact on product awareness.

You'd be surprised at how many more people are influenced by seeing Ant and Dec play on the Wii rather than some anonymous people.

System sales are one thing but show me what the sales are on Wii games?

At E3 didnt Sony announce that PS3 is the only system making profits on previous years figures. Then again and although its taken quite a while PS3 games as of the last 9-12 months have been really good with many exclusives.

Its easy to see why the system is selling well now and with Natal/Move these will only continue to take sales away from Nintendo's Wii. The Wii was a great novelty for most people particulary getting families and non traditional gamers interested in games. Most folk I know with Wii now hardly use it and dont buy many games for it.

Im not so sure on Microsofts price point for Natal, seems a bit high compared to Move.
I wonder which will be the best selling console this Christmas?

Some Wii games sell by the bucket load,

Wii Sports: 66.16m
Wii Sports Resort: 19.14m
NSMBW: 15.8m
Wii Fit Plus: 14.45m
And for the last quarter,
Super Mario Galaxy 2 - 4 million
Wii Sports Resort - 3 million
Wii Sports - 2.7 million
Wii Fit Plus - 1.8 million
New Super Mario Bros. Wii - 1.1 million
These are only Ninty games, games such just dance have sold millions on the Wii.
I think what we percieve as poor wii game sales are things such as core games like the ones seen on the HD twins. As for move/kinect i think kinect will sell more at launch and end up in cupboard in a few months time, where as i see move starting slower but have longer legs and be used more often.

being honest mate I think I trust Nintendo's marketing department's decision more than yours. Hope that doesn't sound too funny, but these decisions aren't taken lightly.

Kinect seems to be about MS further finding their way into people's living rooms and I don't think MS will give up on this if it helps them achieve this goal. I think it will take a few years given the price and I also wonder whether the people most interested in Kinect will be those family members who don't own any HD gaming hardware. I would suggest Sony is very interested in getting pride of place in the living room too with it's 'It only does everything' slogan for the ps3 (except that it doesn't, <- even though I am a bit of a ps3 fanboy I guess :)). Over time I think both Kinect and Move will do well if supported and promoted well enough as I think these technologies will attract a lot of groups to gaming who haven't traditionally been as interested in what's so far been on offer on the ps3 and 360.

Kinect & Move to me don't seem to be entirely about the hardcore gaming market at all and given the success of the Wii I think MS & Sony see the investment into different motion technologies as a maybe long-term plan? Personally I would expect Kinect & Move to be better integrated into HD gaming once the 720 and ps4 come out, assuming the extra controllers are included as standard, which is when I think they will begin to do well and gain more interest.

Kinect & Move might not do too well within hardcore gaming circles but I think they will do very well outside those circles because the casual interest seems to be there, as shown by the Wii.

? why your missing out some good games through you idiocy.

He isnt really.

It has 2 good games, Resident Evil 4, which in itself is available on the PS2 and PC, and Metroid prime 3.

It has literally nothing else worth buying, unless you are one of those people who can spend hours playing yet another Mario rehash.

I agree, there is the odd good game on there but I am so fed up of having hundreds of Mario games, why not try something new for a change? Well because all the fanboys wouldn't buy it :(

The odd thing is that Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 are still the most creative and surprising games i've played this generation, despite being the nth titles in the series. Mario/Zelda/Metroid games aren't the problem, its the general lack of 3rd party support. Having said that, there are still great 3rd party titles available on the Wii - Sin and Punishment 2 being one of the more recent. I actually have more Wii games than PS3 or 360 at the moment.

Indeed. You can hardly call those "rehashes" - they're fresher than anything I've seen on PC/XBOX/PS for a long, long time.

Unfortunately, it's also true that there's hardly any "must have" games for the Wii - you can count them on one hand really. Before SMG2 came out I hadn't played on the Wii for almost a year! Same for the missus - she loves the new Super Mario Brothers game, but before that she hadn't turned the thing on in months. There's no way a "serious" gamer could survive with just a Wii. It's such a shame because it's a wonderful platform and they've sold so many....but the vast majority of them just sit there not doing much :(

Agreed. The question is, could a 'serious' gamer survive without one? Probably, but they'd be missing out on some of the very best (if not the best) games of this gen.

Let's face it, the Wii is worth the asking price for first party Nintendo games alone.

Then what happens. We play those games and then never turn the damn thing on again, which is what has actually happened to so many people. I literally bought a Wii with Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime and completed it; I never turned the thing on again and subsequently sold it. One of the biggest things people are overlooking is that even the best Wii games have zero replay value. Absolutely zero. And that's down to a shoddy non-existent networking infrastructure. You buy the best Wii games and then never play them again, because they are one-time singleplayer games. They are not worth the asking price at all. If I am to pay that much, I fully expect a complete experience. I cannot be the only one who notices the complete lack of Wii games discussion on this forum. There's nothing to talk about beyond seeing the end credits roll.

Everyone rather has Michelle Rodriguez giving him a blowjob everyday rather than Angelina Jolie just once ever. Yeah, not a great analogy but it's a fitting one.
