Hi guys,

My girlfriend is going travelling next year. She's insistant on visiting all sorts of scary places like Thailand, IRAN (!!!) etc etc before eventually ending up spending time in Australia.

Obviously I'd like to be able to contact her and she'd like to be able to contact me and I'm wondering what the most cost effective way of doing this is. Text messaging is probably best but I need to think about sorting her out with a suitable SIM card. She's currently on O2 PAYG with a Samsung Tocco.

Which network offers the most comprehensive roaming coverage on PAYG and the most reasonable rates for sending and receiving text messages?

thanks!

Easiest and cheapest way is just to take an unlocked handset and buy a local PAYG SIM in any country that she's in for any significant length of time. Email is the best bet for places where she'll only be staying there a few weeks.

She's visiting quite a few countries and then there is the hassle of a new number each time :(

why dont you go with her? oh wait thats what a normal person would do ;)

Don't you have some imaginary cousins to brag about someplace else (After all, it seems you've nothing noteworthy about yourself so ride off the 'success' of your cousins)?

Guess what - she isn't going on her own

internet > phones for this to be fair

make her get a geek phone with wifi and email instead of text . or maybe even one that can use skype ?

Not really too much of a hassle if she texts you when she gets the new phone/number - I guess you'll be in touch enough to know when she's changing country, and will await a new text?

Seems like a pain, but it could end up being the cheapest way, then you know you're not going to have to worry about roaming costs?

Haha brilliant!

Back on topic, I've actually found Orange to have good roaming offers.

When I went away I hardly used my phone but checked Facebook and email every few days as theres internet cafe's everywhere where travellers go and they're cheap too. Thailand for example was 10baht(about 4p) for 20min.

Iran though.....not somewhere i'd go even though im considering adventures to some remote and scary places.

Just tonight i was reading a leaflet in ASDA about ASDA mobile. Seemed very cheap - i seem to remember 20p a min from any country abroad to any other country.

EDIT: Ok, tell a lie - because it's out of the EU it's like 80p a minute

Still, 80p a minute is cheap compared to some other providers. Orange is about £1.20 a minute from Spain I remember.

You can pick up mobile world sim cards for very little from the Carphone Warehouse which are stunning forcalling other countires - under 10p for many places. If you pick one up, you could call her.

I think they have an even cheaper one out as well from memory.
