Worn/flat tyre advice

Roughly how much is an alignment? The MOT was done at a national chain (In'n'Out), and even though I'm sure they're rubbish I thought I'd be better off than going to Dave's garage down a back alley. Oh well.

Your wheels must have been pointing completely different directions. I'd take a close look at the one of the other side.

Sorry so what exactly are you asking for here? Not sure what advice you want.

Just what caused it/how it happened/how to prevent it and whether it was caused by my MOT mechanics :).

Probably about 40-50 quid to get it done properly on something like a Clio.

Thanks.

I guess I'm used to buying things or a service and if after a month that thing goes wrong you have something to shout about. This is why I hate cars :p.

Cars can be and often are a royal PITA, Beats the bus though ey? :p

ps sorry for being harsh.. but you aint the first on here to post tyres in a shocking state. :(

Hopefully it will cost less than that, such 'city' cars do not always have ability to adjust tracking on the rear - my Fiesta ST for example has completely fixed hubs on the rear beam, with no adjustment for tracking at all.

As such its a lot simplier, with only the front being tweaked, a full hunter laser alignment and tracking only cost me £19.57 + vat (and thats at A-line in Dudley so somewhere decent).

Yeah... but does it beat a bike? :p (I cycle to work)

Last month was a ****, had my MOT, tax, insurance and repairs all within one month. Had to spend ~£1.5k in total, bank balance was NOT happy. And when I bought the car 2 years ago for £1.6k it makes you wonder whether it's even worth it :p.

No problem, I'd be the same if some idiot posted a question about something I know about :p.

Yea its worth it as you will now hopefully have an up together reliable car. Better the devil you know :)

Just book the alignment for the same day you get the tyres, and go straight there dont drive on them any more than you have to. Dont let the tyre place fob you off with "we will track it" get it done properly.

Wow, I feel SO much better now, I've shelled that out in the last 2 months on insurance, tyres etc and suddenly it feels like a bargain :D

To be fair, yes you should check your tyres regularly, and you should have spotted something was wrong before your tyres reach the canvas.

However, if id just had suspension parts changed at a garage id expect them to check the tracking as part of the work, if they don't have the equiptment id expect them to tell me it needs checking asap or for them to take it and get it done. You dont go to a garage to get half a job done.

.

Join the club.. sounds about on par what i've spent since Jan :)

I'm confused...the wearing and hole are on the inside tyre wall, surely if it was just tracking the the excessive wear would be on the 'top' of the tyre?

I'm know nothing but it looks like its rubbing against something on the inside.

OK, this is what happened:

At MOT it was found that the near side tyre was worn below the limit at an angle. This means it was worn below the limit in the central 3/4 of the tyre, probably worse beyond that. The drivers side tyre passed, but was probably just shy of the chords outside the centre 3/4. You cannot scuff the inside off of just one front tyre.

You had the suspension fixed and you replaced the failing tyre because you're either cheap or don't know that you should replace tyres in pairs.

In the month since then you've worn the other tyre the last mm or 2 to the chords and found out why exposed chords are bad.

Stop whining about it.

@godinman
Tracking takes the shoulders off tyres, over-inflation takes the top off, looking at the OP's pics it was severely out of alignment, steering was probably as numb as your back-side on a concrete sofa.

I fail to see how anyone can not check their tyres, I mean.. it's not as if you have to get your head near them anyway.

I'm sad enough to 'perv' at my tyres as I walk past my car, it's pretty easy to spot something and think '**** me , that doesn't look right'

Lucky escape OP.

lol I do that now I've got Eagle F1s.

Mind you I never did with my el-cheapo tyres on my "ready for scrap heap" cars. Still checked my tyres every couple weeks back then though.
