Thats right,

My 36GB Raptor has started ticking/clicking roughly once a second. You could literally set your watch by it! I have read around and it seems like RMA time, but I just wanted to check on here first.

I did a full diagnostic using WD's own diagnostic app and it came back fine! Yet the ticking leads me to believe it's on its last legs.

It is still in Warranty as far as I am aware - RMA?

You're unlikely to get an RMA if the diagnostics aren't reporting any problems. There are a few things which could cause regular disk activity like that, it may be worth eliminating them first:

System Restore
Indexing Service
Logging from any running applications

Then there are the built in diagnostic tools in Windows, check:

Event Viewer - anything in the system or application logs?
Performance Monitor - take a look at the disk reads / writes per second, is there regular activity from the system, if not then the ticking could well be the drive playing up.

I just can't see how any of the programs mentioned could be responsible for the ticking...It has never happened before with any other drive.

Anyway, I have just ordered a new WD 320 Gig Caviar SE 16MB Cache...so I will install that Wednesday night and see what happens then!

I noticed this same problem with one of my drives the other week....ticking now and again, rpstewart is correct check software 1st.

This only started after i installed the lastest Diskeeper 2007 i thought it was strange but i stopped Diskeeper from defragging all the drives in the background but the ticking carried on. Then i noticed the I-FAAST was still enabled so i turned disabled it and funny enough the ticking as stopped completely and once again i have quietness...This was over 4 weeks ago now and still i have no ticking.

Well to be fair it just started happening after a fresh clean install of windows  I didn't download or install anything at that point?

I turn of System restore last night...still ticking...but I don't know what else I can and should turn off

Right,

I replaced the Raptor with a brand new 320 WD Caviar SE 16MB Cache - Although the drive is almost whisper quiet the ticking is still occuring - So it MUST be a Windows activity which is causing this.

The HD activity light is still flashing on and off at the same intervals as before - Help!!!

u need to figure out which program is accessing the drive - in windows press ctrl-alt-del which brings up your task manager - 1st kill any application u dont recognise and if thats all clear try to kill some under the processes tab.

could be your PSU or CASE FANS
or a IC on motherboard or your sata cable

why did you buy another hard disc?
take the side of the case and put your ear to it (the easiest solution.)
