Asking the impossible of some of the more mature gamers, or those fortunate enough to have grown up with gaming
Couple examples from recent memory however (and one a bit further back)
Duke Nukem Forever
Command and Conquer 4
If its not broke, don't fix it.. I am a huge advocate of innovation and evolution of a product but in these 2 cases they should had stuck to what they know
The fact these were both triple A titles being retailed at £5 each within months of release speaks volumes
Ultima Online - I'll elaborate a little on this, I specifically mean the "cut-off" point where EA went in with their heavy handed care bear approach, got rid of Garriot (may be an eccentric arse today, but he was integral to the games early success), and basically took what I could only describe as the "World of Warcraft" of its time and ruined it, most folks that played actively during the good times may fondly remember the early era as "pre-trammel" as I do
I consider the last one significant, because this action had an indirect impact on the mmorpg genre as a whole, it basically all but killed the element of risk in games (aside from a few "hit and miss" offshoots, EVE and darkfall spring to mind) and put us where we are today.
Though I expect the mileage on my "risk vs no-risk" to vary, obviously for every person of simular thinking, theres one that likes that it took that direction
