[Worst Moment] PC Shutdown during games...

This is a weird one for you...

I have just built the following system:

i7 2600K
Asus Sabertooth P67
2 x 4GB Corsair RAM
2 x ATI HD 6970 GFX on 11.2 drivers
3 x SSD (Vertex Bigfoot, OCZ Vertex and Kingston) - 120GB each
Corsair 1000W (18months old)
Corsair H70 (emitting rattling noise, but temps are stable)
Win 7 x64
Corsair 700D

Ran Prime95 for 1hr, no problem. Max CPU Temp on any core was 60'C.
Ran Win7 memtest - no issues.
System is running very cool.

Now, in the middle of Dawn of War II:Retribution (perhaps the best benchmark I know) the system basically powers off after a time between 15-30mins. It then powers back, stops. Shuts off. Then powers on again OK. All this within 15secs - from gameplay to back on.

Event Logs are very unhelpful - "The previous system shutdown at 12:46:13 on ‎19/‎03/‎2011 was unexpected."

CoreTemp logs display max temps of 42'C on any core.
GPUs reach around 70'C and the fan isn't as unbearable as the HD 5870XF that these replaced.

I'm at a loss really, Corsair HX 1000W is perhaps the best PSU out there, and has been perfect so far - able to run the exact same game no problem in my previous system (see sig).

Any ideas please? :(
 
Memtest first, but that should give a bluescreen error rather than shutdown.
I'd still be thinking overheating.
If you built it yourself, take it apart, put it back togteher, see if anything was loose.

I've already done that before this thread... and i've built over 500PCs in my time lol!

Speedfan 4.43 is reporting the following voltages on the Corsair 1KW PSU:
3Vsb: 3.44V
Vbat: 3.36V
Vcore: 1.04V
+12V: 6.71V
AVcc: 3.38V
3Vcc: 3.36V
VIN1: 1.02V
VIN2: 2.04V
VIN3: 1.49V
 
I had a similar problem last summer, I could run anything fine for around half an hour before power off but I could reboot soon. I thought it was a temperature problem on something on the motherboard so I put a big fan in the side and I have never had a problem since.

That can't be right.

If it is there's something seriously wrong with your PSU.

Yes, but it should not reduce voltages. At least not so dramatically (+12 -> 6v??? must be a wrong reading). Power (watt) is amps x volts, in effect, the amount of watt is not controlled by the PSU, but rather depends on the 'load' required by your components. As usage ramps up, amps go up, but voltages should remain constant whatever the load.

EDIT : Check health status on the BIOS. Voltages should be consistent there at least. your software must be returning inaccurate values.

Components like the CPU and GPU will lower clocks to reduce power consumption but the 12V on your power supply should always be 12V +/- 5%.

I don't even see how your PC would start at all if the 12V supply was only 6.71V.

Have you tried looking in the BIOS? There's usually a screen there which shows the supply voltages.
 
I shall check in BIOS in a moment - running a massive Comp-Stomp in DOWII in the background to test the stability.

I had a quick check over the system, and one of the 6pin GFX connectors on the primary card wasn't flush in the socket (about 2mm out on a slight angle) - (the latch connector was still not engaged in the 6pin power). I pushed it in and it engaged finally. I am testing this now.

Memory would bluescreen which it isn't.
CPU would throw up other anomalies I believe under any stress test or general operation.
Motherboard is unlikely to be overheating as it's the Sabertooth which is meant to be the coolest out there.
Case side is off and ambient is 17'C.
All cores are 39'C in load
GPU cores are 80 / 79 in load

Sounds like that's your problem. I had something similar, the card ran at 1/2 capacity, but it was obvious something was wrong :)

what are the chances of not plugging that in tight on both occassions though?

I think very high - it was very difficult to plug the 6-pin in so that it fully engaged - it's going to be a beast to get out of there.

I will now check my BIOS voltages and report back with those...

Taking side of case off will actually increase your temps.

I won't go into it much but it's all down to pressure :)
 
Have you installed the Asus AI Suite II to check all the temps?

I've just setup a simlar spec and have found the PCIE-2 gets hot when running games, it reaches over 60c. Because we have the H70 there no air blowing down onto the board so Asus suggest installing a fan.


"To achieve the best cooling environment, a downward blowing CPU cooler is required. If you are not using a downward blowing CPU cooler, we recommend that you install a 50mm x 50mm x 10mm assistant fan on the Thermal Armor."

I'm looking at ordering one to try and resolve this.
 
I've just looked in the box again and there's a sheet with the info for the assistant fan. Thats what that removable cover is on the board.
 
Ah, I will be getting the Noctua NH-D14, but this will not be air direct onto the Motherboard, more like air alongside it.

Could you post up the info sheet please? - mine's in the garage lol!
