Some of these are shocking; I feel quite lucky to not lived anywhere near as bad as these.
I did live (on rotation) in a place called Kuryk, Kazakhstan. That was pretty bad but the upside was I was paid to be there and it was for a 28 day stint followed by 28 days off.

There's no tourists in Kuryk because it's a port and industrial zone. Most likely they were locals working there but you would see seals regularly in the Caspian. Absolutely freezing even in the summer but the "beach" was the only nice thing about the place. The first night I got to the compound I was staying in I saw a Wolf at the gates. You weren't allowed out after dark anyway without a local.
