Worst start for a first time builder

have you tried the faulty memory in different memory slots on the mobo, and the working memory in other slots to confirm its not a problem with the mobo memory slots ?

unlucky with the problems on your first build :(.

Yep did this as well, working ram works on different slots

****sorry for the triple post, wouldn't all me to quote all of you****

Edit: left it on last night while downloading, and woke up to a turned off pc (could be anything that triggered this)

So it turned off with the good stick of RAM installed and the suspect stick removed? Are you sure it wasn't in sleep mode?

EDIT: I know it sucks, but trust me, you don't learn anything if you build a machine and it just works. I think everything I've learned has been from troubleshooting problems :)

Since i wasn't the person that turned it on when waking up, i suspect that it was indeed in sleep mode.. EDIT: checked sleep settings and it was set to 30mins SOLVED

and yes these problems suck right now but figuring out what went wrong and fixing it definitely made me learn more about building =]...

so now to possibly return this ram stick, thank you everyone for the input, really appreciate it!

As others have said above, have you checked the BIOS yet before thinking of returning the RAM stick(s)?

Not sure if this relates to the problem but i just noticed that my bios memory frequency is set to 1333mhz and cpu-z dram is reading it as 1333mhz aswell

my ram is 1600mhz however, does this have any effect on the ram?

thats just the mb default speed setting,to save instability issues ect,its upto you to set the memory speed to 1600mhz in the bios or enable xmp (extreme memory profile) in the bios if your memory supports it,that sets speed/timings/voltage for you
