Worst turbulence you've experienced?

Upon landing in Aberdeen, the pilot told us we've just had 4 landings for the price of one, strong crosswind plus bad weather = plane aproaching the runway basically sideways.

I've had a landing with strong crabbing, seemd like nearly 40degrees. But the wind was very consistent if strong so it was actually a very smooth landing, just very strange to see.

Crossing the Himalayas in the back of a 747 was pretty bumpy for quite a while. Looking forward to the 777 doing the reverse later this week...

The pilot of the Emirates A380 into Auckland last week hit the deck pretty hard too...

Nothing strong enough to get people sick/zero g!

Strong username to thread content ratio.

Flew back from NYC the other day into Heathrow and it was a bit choppy on the way in to Heathrow including a lightning strike on the plane! Captain came over the tannoy to settle a few folk down as there was one guy freaking out when the lightning hit the plane and there was a very large flash and cracking noise which captain said was completely normal and nothing to worry about!

Flying into Newcastle one night, the weather was awful and we'd been flung about the place for about twenty minutes leading up to landing. Heading for the runway there was a moment when everyone was flung up against their seatbelts, a moment of feeling almost weightless and then SPLAT, we hit the runway with a loud bang - it felt like we left the ground for a second or two, and then we hit the runway again and it all returned to normal - apart from someone sobbing a few rows behind me. There was a round of applause when a relieved-sounding pilot welcomed everyone to Newcastle :D

Thunderstorm over India, got very bumpy for quite a while, got to admit i got a little nervous when i looked out the window and saw lighting strike the engine. Only time when on an airplane i was a little nervous

The one entering the gulf jet stream on the way to Boston was far less but quite a few people screamed on that one, i was just busy eating a biscuit to care. Not like there much you can do to ensure your survival when a plane falls out of the sky

Malta to Bristol around ~8 years ago. Just passed the south French coast and the plane went mental all the way back to Brizz. As we were landing, you could see the runway out the window, next the sky (and nothing else). Rince, repeat, until we landed sort-of sideways, with a rapturous applause when we came to a halt. I absolutely bricked it the entire way as I was having a very nervous time with flying.

Every time i fly over India to Australia, the turbulence is dreadful.

This, last yr flying to and from Australia...dear god the amount of turbulence we hit especially flying to Australia was pretty horrendous and im not a very good flyer, quite nervous in fact so that didnt help.

We did a pocket of bad turbulence in the A380 that i was flying in, must have dropped a good thousand feet in a matter of seconds.

All i know is that i was praying and hanging on for dear life lol.

Not turbulence as such, but flying back from Malta to Bristol in November when we had the particularly bad storms and floods 4 years ago. It was so windy that the plane was literally landing sideways, ie I could see the end of the runway from my window seat. Props to the pilot.

Was I on your flight? lol

Ascension Island to Mount Pleasant airport, the Falklands.

It felt like the wings were going to snap off. We were about 1000 miles from the Falklands when we had to turn around and fly 3000 miles back to Ascension because the aircraft was already flying outside of its supposed capability and things were only getting worse.

What do I win? :p

The medal that fell out your backside?

Flying into Narita was rather bumpy last time I was in Japan as there was the tail end of a typhoon still going through (fortunately not as bas as their recent ones). There were quite a few worried people on the plane, though personally I just wanted to land and get to the hotel as I'd been awake for ~24hrs and was knackered.

Flying I don't have an issue with .... I really dislike airports though ....

Was flying my little Cessna 172 in Florida. Took off in still conditions on the ground. Got 2000ft up and suddenly my wings were rocking and I was being thrown up and down in my seat. Got down and landed pretty quick after that...

I am a nervous flier and I fly so infrequently I can nearly remember every flight I've been on.
My only experience of turbulence was on my first ever long haul flight. Flying over the Persian gulf in an Emirates 777, it started with a very sudden drop that lifted peoples drinks a few inches off their tables (and caused a few muffled screams/exclamations throughout the cabin) followed by a few minutes of smooth flight. Then gradual buildup of turbulence that got to point of throwing open overhead lockers and tossing things around the cabin.
The worst bit was I then had to force myself to board an even longer connecting flight whilst still shaken and ill from the previous one :(
