Ill be of to university next year to study music technology, i was going to buy a vostro soon as i was planning on switching my desktop to a notebook for several reasons. When i went to an open day i noticed that the music technology department that i am hoping to get into is filled with macs! And i have heard that music producing/ editing etc is best done on a mac.

So i was wondering should i get a macbookpro/macbook or vostro?

Would it be worth getting it next year as technology moves on and my macbook might be outdated when it comes to use it in university?

What spec would be needed?

Thanks

Get it next year imo, there'll be a good chance of updated specs, and/or a new look by then tbh. :)

Spec.. Erm.. Ask someone else...

lol yea, i know it would be better waiting but i would quite like a laptop soon.
The only reason i would hold of untill next year is if i wil need the better spec for my course...

Thanks for the quick reply

I did Bsc(Hons)Sound Technology and MSc Advanced Music Production and yes, all the studio's tend to use Macs.

If you can make the switch it'll make your life so much easier.

It helped me learn the OS when I bought my first iMac a few years ago, so when in the studio I was in my element :)

so you think i should buy the mac soon to get used to the OS. Can you recoment any programs on windows (preferably free lol) to use to get some experience?

As far as i can remember they use: matlab? macmsx? protools?
Not sure on that tho...

Also, why are the macs a lot more expensive?

Thanks

There aren't really any programs that will get you used to OS X.

Running OS X on PC hardware is not only illegal but quite difficult, and will deprive you from the real experience.. best to try some Macs out at a local computer shop.

They'll be using Matlab and ProTools for definite, so it's worth trying out some demo/trial versions if you want to get a hang of the programs.

You can download ProTools LE for Windows (doesn't require hardware), but it is extremely limited, so don't put all your eggs in to that basket.

Well, this is debatable.. Apple will let you believe you're getting a "complete experience", whilst some people will say you get a sturdy machine for the money, whilst others will swear they're rip off merchants.

You can get the majority of Apple products via education discount (http://store.apple.com/Catalog/uk/Images/routingpage.html), prices vary depending on the education discount you qualify for.

If you're willing to get a Mac now you could always learn the OS, and sell up next time (in time for Uni).. then use the money toward a new Mac.

Hope this helps :)

Thanks, ive looked for a pro tools download for windows and cant find one that works. Could you link me to a site that has one? Or an alternative program?

I think i will wait untill next early next year and buy one... Seems like the sensible option!

one more question... You can run vista on the mac cant you? Can you have vista and *** mac os on at the same time and choose at boot up which one to load?

Would get my vote too, I only dabble a little with digital content creation and Macs are both more common in this area and in my opinion a little easier to get started with.

I'd recommend buying one a month or two before you start your course so you can get everything setup the way you like it and get used to the new OS.
