Worth getting a Q6600?

Thinking of upgrading from a AMD 64X2 5200 sometime soon but just wondering;
1. Is it worth upgrading? (Most probably is)

2.Is it worth getting a Q6600 at this moment in time? Or should I just wait that little bit longer? (Summer, Early Autumn time?)

Thanks

Not to sound too harsh mate, but theres been quite a few threads in the last couple weeks about this topic ;)

Only you can judge if an upgrade is worthwhile... Do you need more processing power than your current cpu can provide? Or do you just want a new toy to play with? Both are good reasons to upgrade imo but its up to you if you this it is worth the money.

I've just upgraded to a Q6600 and I think it is a fantastic chip at a good price which clocks very high... Should keep me happy for a couple of years hopefully.

I went from my old X2 3800+. So an older CPU than yours but the difference is like night and day. I've never owned an Intel CPU but I took the leap after reading the many many many threads and it's been excellent.

Overclocked nicely as well, it helps to have watercooling. :)

It shouldn't cost you too much as I guess you already have DDR2 memory to hand from the AMD system? So all you need is the CPU and Mobo. Plus whatever you get back from your old rig.

Up to you really mate, but imo you won't be dissapointed. For example. I've been playing the add-on to Supreme Commander which actually utilises all x4 cores. It's brilliant... AND I've been ALT-TAB'ing out to do stuff in Windows and on the internet and the system is still fully responsive. ALT-TAB'ing back in to the game is instant.

One happy Q6600 owner!

More the happy with my quad, day to day normal use it doesn't feel any different to my old P4 3.2 but it's cut my video encoding times, no not cut it's slashed, in some case by 5-6 times. :)

There good value and they clock well but not as well as intels newer quadcore CPU's, only made it to 3.4GHz on my Q6600 with an 120 Ultra Extreme and two 120mm fans, with the newer ones 3.8-4GHZ+ is **** easy plus they have more cache so are faster clock for clock then the Q6600 in many applications.

which newer ones are we talking about mate?

Well actually the Q9300 actually has less cache, 6mb, but the other ones do have 12mb.

I'd heard that the limited multi means you will need a mobo and ram capable of hitting high FSB in order to get good clocks out of the new quads, that's why I went for a Q6600 at xmas rather than waiting.

In answer to the OPS question, there are fast enough tbh for most anything you want to chuck at them, if your needing uber power or needing to extend your e-penis then wait for the new quads and hope you can reach the high FSB needed to achieve good clocks.

Check out this post regarding oc'ing the Q9300:

It doesn't look like 3.8-4.0Ghz is going to be **** easy!

Even the Q9450 only has a multi of 8.

It's the whole evolution thing, just because it is newer technology don't just expect it to perform better than the old Q600!!
If you are not going to be overclocking then sure the upcoming quads are better and faster but if you want to overclock then you might have to invest a fair amount of money to get just a bit better performance than the GO Quads.
You could wait for ever so I would bite the bullet now but remember these new quads will be the last release on Socket 775.

I just upgraded from a A64 4000+ single core that was clocked at 3.2Ghz...

Plonked in me Q6600 on monday, spent the last couple days installing windows, just done a bit of overclocking and am now at 3.42Ghz prime stable (well has been for last hour and still goin so we will see but im sure it will end up around the 3.4Ghz mark)...

Anyways, this feels like I'm using the future, I copy a couple of dvds to me hard drive, open winodws media player to watch a movie clip, encode a dvd, browse ie all at the same time and its just SMOOTH....no lag whatsoever :)

I'd say go for it...

It cost me £350 delivered to upgrade from me old kit (4GB OCZ mem\Q6600\Asus P5K mobo)...

Well chuffed...

EDIT : oh yeah btw, the 3.4Ghz i'm getting is on a really crappy VID of 1.325 :( so you should easily be able to get that or better with any Q6600 and decent air cooling)

End of the day, the new chips are coming out soon but who cares. The performance difference will be negligable, and the price difference won't be for the good chips. The chips priced around the current Q6600 have a problem because of the multiplier being too low so they won't be able to hit any higher than the 6600...

The newer bits inside the chip give anything from 1%-10% extra performance in benchmarks...

But have a look at the game frame rates!!!? Nigh on identical, no benefit at all :p

Good riddance AMD, you've shafted us overclockers who were the only ones who spread the word on the company.

I did the same, but it was also the upgrade from DDR to DDR2 and 2GB to 4GB - so I'm not sure how much of the difference is due to the CPU but I'm pretty damn happy with my system for now:)

we need 2 good companys to fight it out otherwise all the chips will be stupidly@ 600 quid like the qx's are i mean its ridiculous what intel charge the top end amd are not even 200

back the cheaper company imo
