Worth getting a Q6600?

sigh

How can you really say such a thing, if it wasn't for AMD we'd still be on Pentium 4s or something equally as rubbish.

Thats completely true, but look how AMD exploied the market when they had top notch CPUs. They could have totally dominated the market and so that everyone knew that AMD was a big player....if they hadn't have released things like FX58 CPUs for £800.

They used to be the overclockers friend, I don't mean how good the chips were but how open they were with things...They totally rinced us for all our cash when they knew they had a good formula.

At least these days with the Core architechture, it spans from £100 right up there to around £800.

With the old A64s we never had those cheap high clocking CPUs until AMD knew they'd messed up and Intel priced them out the game leaving them no choice.

Agreed, i used to look down on Pentiums as the muppet choice lol, But with the AMD's i had, they all overheated and all performed average, Athlon XP was a nightmare, but they were more expensive if i remember right.

I'd love for a 3rd player to enter the CPU market, maybe Nvidia might sneak in one day in the future, though fair play to Intel, they've kept prices VERY reasonable and was spoilt for choice on my new CPU.

Not a chance that nvidia will join in and lower prices as they are a fabless company, they just design a chip, send the desing off to those massive outputing fab owning companies in china and pump them out. I don't think the likes of TMSC are advanced enough to be able to produce chips that can compete with Intel\AMD, its not really their thing I think they are more into the sheer volume of output rather than cost\unit.

More chance of IBM getting in the boat really, and thats not going to happen :)

...could be completely wrong on all the above though, soz I gone OT ain't I

I loved my Barton XP, my favorite processor ever, at that point AMD were so much cheaper than Intel, clocked my 1.80GHz to 2.45GHz on air, was well proud.

Intel's are looking much better performance, overclocking & value than they ever have, will be upgrading from my X2 4000+ to a Q6600 soon :)

I'd just OC the 5200. If it is a F3 stepping 90nm CPU, or a G2 stepping 65nm CPU, then they should both hit 3.2Ghz.

From my E6600 to my Q6600 I dont notice any difference. Perhaps maybe other than the cores seem to work less.. but they would cause there is 4 of them.

Well I was refering to Q9450 and up, the ones with 12mb cache, the 7.5 multi on the Q9300 limits you a little to much, infact 3.7Ghz is pretty good considering.

Just what i was thinking mate, that post proves how good these chips are gonna be if anything:confused: 3.7 ghz at ~ 1.4v is awesome especially with the faster architecture.

3.7 is pretty good but that was really pushing it @ 495FSB.

Basically the Q6600 is such a great chip:cool: that there is only a slight increase to the new quads.

Although the Q9450 may turnout to be a great chip. Just have to wait till they are released.

What sort of FSB's have you guys reached oc'ing?

Whatever you do, if at all possible, check the VID, thats the be all and end all of the Q6600's...just make sure it's low...

...Not 1.325 like mine :p
