Worth getting AMD Opteron 175 Dual Core for gaming?

Hey guys, i'm thinking of buying an AMD opteron 175 dual core (s939) but i'm not 100% if it will be worth it.

Currently i have an AMD 4000@ 2.7ghz s939, i always wanted to get an AMD 4800 to replace my current cpu but i never had the money for it. Now that i have enough money to buy the AMD 4800, i have come to realise the processor has become out of production and quite impossible to buy in any online store. I have foud a few websites that do sell the AMD 4800, but most of them sell them to an extent of £400+!

The AMD opteron cpu is being sold in an auction website for £169, so is that a good price for that cpu?
I know the Opteron cpu's are specially designed for servers, but i also heard they are extremely overclockable and good for gaming, and i am a gaming enthusiast.
I also know the C2D cpu's are way more faster than both of the cpu's, but i intend to hang on to my current motherboard and ram as i just bought the ram only 5 months ago for almost £200.

So my question is, will the AMD opteron 175 dual core (s939) be a good alternative to the 4800+, and will it be good for gaming?
any advice would be grately appreciated

keep what you have now, I have an opteron 2.7ghz dual core (170 series i think) it is great dont get me wrong, but iv not noticed a massive deal of difference in it from my old 3700+ A64 @ 2.8ghz. So if your only playing games leave it for now my friend, the VERY best thing to do, then keep on saving up for something in the future

Thats quite surprising. I expected the opteron dual core cpu's to have the upper hand against single core cpu's, but i'm surprised it doesn't make that much of a difference

My intention was to buy a dual core s939 cpu for now and use it for another year or so, so after then, the c2d cpu's should have gone down in price.
Now i'm not sure if i should buy an opteron cpu :(

You might see a difference in performance once developers utilize dual core in games. But at the mo its only good for multitasking, though windows does seem quicker with mine, compared to a single core i had before.

Yeah dont buy it, if you use photoshop a lot like I do, there IS a big difference, but photoshop is programmed for dual core, games (which you say is ALL you do), even the VERY LATEST ones that supposedly take advantage of dual core, it makes not one tiny bit of difference as far as I can tell, infact in some of the more well known games the 2.8ghz 3700 seemed a smidge faster, perhaps because it had all the mem bandwidth to itself, instead of sharing it.

Obviously if you JUST benchmark you would get higher points, but then benchmarks give you more 'points' just because u have dual core, real world games again, no difference

Whats the likelyhood that the price of opteron s939 dual cpu's price increase in the future since s939 cpu's production have been stopped?
4800 cpu's are knowhere to be seen on any website, even if some websites do sell them, they're sold for more than £400. So i am kinda concerned if the price for the opteron cpu's will increase.

I do intend to wait some time before i buy a dual core cpu since they will not benefit on any games in terms of performance, but will it be worth the risk that the price might go up in the future?

Fairly sure they will go up once supply starts to dwindle... but if you're intending to wait a while I wouldn't worry since Core 2 Duo will only get cheaper for the time being.

Yeah doesn't matter if they do, just buy whatever dual core is best when you want to buy and it will be used in games, core 2 whatever etc will b way cheaper when you buy

If you was to use a price comparrison site like pricerunner.co.uk and search AMD 4800 you will find a 4800 skt 939 for £215 its got availability on this one particular site of 1-2 weeks if you dont mind waiting for it.

They're actually out of stock, they been out of stock for these 4800+ for more than 2 months but they still say they will have them in 1-2weeks time

Or ...

With that kit you could sell the cpu / mobo / ram on an auction site and upgrade to a C2D 6400, 2gb ocuk ram and a Gigabyte S3 mobo for about £120-150. That should clock up to 3-3.3ghz pretty easy. More hassle now but a faster system.

I've got a very similar system to yours but I'm gonna wait unitl Jan to see if memory prices start to drop down again.

if like me you don;t want to shell out more cash for a new mobo and ram, wait till next year. someone mentioned that there will be some s939 dual core cpus appearing, probably 65w ones. im waiting for one of those. easy 3ghz and very cool running and low power draw. won;t beat a conroe but for the price its gonna be best value for money so s939 users who want to keep their parts.

im getting myself an opteron 170 RETAIL from the states including postage for £115 next week :) CAB CCBBE 0615 DPMW too! should be good for 2.9Ghz per core, maybe 3Ghz as i have water cooling. hell at that price i wish i could buy a suitcase full :p

Good stepping 165's are available from the UK new for less than £100 if you look hard enough. I have just built a system for my brother that reached almost 3GHz on stock volts. His stepping was CBBEE 0616 xxxx - cannot remeber the end. Shame OcUK cannot source any ATM.

I got 1 of those £99 opteron 165's last week, great stepping ccbbe 0615 dpmw it's doing 2.8 gig on 1.35v prime stable :D

What others have said; With that setup and looking for a cheap upgrade get the 165 Opteron, the last batch are superb clockers. Around £100 brand new Retail Box and the stock cooler is quality and good enough for hardcore clocking :)

save the rest and buy someone you love a nice gift :)
