Currently have:

Winnie 3000 @ 2.57ghz (285X9)
asus a8n-sli (although have a spare premium lying about)
2 X 1gb corsair cl2 pc3200
6600GT

Use it for all the normal stuff, everything is ok...just when im converting videos or doing a few things at same time it does get a little bit slow, but nothing big

im just wondering is it worth waiting for the new amd thing, AM2, or will it not be much of an improvement, so is it better to go x2/opteron now, and will i see improvement?

on side note, if yes to go dual, is it ok to jus put in the asus-sli, or shall i stick it in the premium as i have it spare?

Ive got a single core opteron @ 2.7Ggz, I was going to get a dual core, but decided to wait for AM2 to come out, and 939 prices to plummet, just like socketA did when 939 was released.

so you're going to get 939 dual core when am2 comes out, not am2?

If the price of SKTA has plummeted, then why is that they are now gold dust and sell for a frigging fortune?

As to an answer to your question, you are already touching 2.6Ghz with your Winnie... Going dual core for you will be close to a waste of money unless you go really high end, and even then, you wont benefit unless you actually need the extra benefits a dual core will give you, and at 2.6Ghz, it wont give you as much as you would think.

Yes because single core is being phased out. For example Intel anticipates 90% of its production to be of dual core CPUs by 2007...

On this note, how will Intel dual cores work with XP?

I got a Prescott 3.6Ghz ( 660 ) and Windows thinks its a Dual core, or at least it says its got 2 CPUs anyway.

Now, if I got a dual core Intel, will it, like my x2 4400, say like it does with the Pentium, that I have 2 CPUs, or will it get 2 Cores, each with 2 of these virtual CPUs?

Also, XP Home can see both cores on the x2, it can also see both the virtual CPUs on the P4, but as we know, it cannot see more than the one Physical CPU, so how will XP Home see a dual core P4 if it has this Virtual CPU No Swearing!?

By this virtual CPU crud, I mean its got HT... Or are the dual cores non HT?

I have to ask, cos my AMDs are all single cored, with *** exception of the x2 of course, but the info I get from that is clear... It either is, or it isnt dual core... Problem solved, but this is my first Intel for quite some time, and this HT junk is acting like its got 2 when its not, which may seem a bit fun, but its also a bit weird in a way.

The intel your on about is a single core, but it has hyper threading. So it can act as 2 cores to an extent.
Because the pipelines in the P4 are so long and often the execution is done half way through the pipe the second half of the pipe is used to do something else, hence a virtual core.

Hope thats what your after

Ok, thanks for that, I had wondered about the how or why, but I was rather wondering about whether Dual core Intels have this hyper threading, and if so, then how will the OS perceive the CPUs as?

Will they get 2 CPUs or will they get another 2 virtual CPUs too? - making it 4

And if this is the case, will XP Home play ball?

Can you see where I am at?

ok so basically i should just wait for am2/conroe then

Thats what i would do, its not an amazingly long wait for saying conroe is expected end of june/july? imo uprgading now is not a good idea - even if its just to see prices drop, im not saying they definately will but if they do then surely you will be abit gutted if you bought now?

Of the current intel dual core chips on the extreme edition processers have hyperthreading. So thats effectively 4 cores (at times) - still can't match AMD's dual cores for sheer perforamnce though, although that is set to change soon enough unless AMD have an ace up their sleeve
