Worth swapping from Android to iPhone?

Hi all, I've been a long time android user and my phone is due for renewal soon. I was debating a change over from Android to an iPhone but unsure as never had a real experience with iPhone.

My choices I'm looking at are either the pixel 7 pro or a 14 pro max. I do use my phone a lot so I like to go for higher models, but I don't know if I'd be willing to change over. Has anyone else had the same swap over and I was wondering what their thoughts and experiences were with it. I don't want to go over to iPhone and end up regretting it and be stuck for 2 years.

Thanks in advance

I use an iPhone for work and have a Pixel as a personal device. The iPhone is very polished, is well supported in terms of software updates. However, I would not swap over to iPhone for my personal device as Apple doesn't offer proper background syncing, which irritates me, as certain apps have to be left open to properly sync (Dropbox, Google Photos, music apps etc). Also, the notifications are nowhere near as good.

If those things don't bother you, then I doubt you'll have any issues making the move.

I wouldn't say notifications are a huge deal for me, but I do use Google photos a lot as I have a Google drive. Think it might be worth me getting the pixel then as that will probably be my best bet. I was thinking about buying a used iPhone XR and temporarily swapping over to that so I'm not locked into any contracts or such.

Thank you for letting me know your experiences with both

Well why not get an old iphone for £50 and test drive it first. You can easily sell it later.

All iphones are so similar that once you have tried one of them you have tried all of them.

If you dont like the basic operation of an older one then you wont like the newer ones either. They have the same Apple DNA running through them all.

Completely agree with this. If you're trying to see how you'd get on with iOS, even an older iPhone will give you an idea.

The newer phones just have better displays/camera/ performance etc, but the phone experience is pretty much the same in all.

I've been using Android for a long time, got given an iPhone for work and didn't enjoy using it, didn't like the UI after years of Android. Pixels are fantastic phones, I can't ask for more from mine. Battery lasts two days, great camera, OS is speedy and never crashes.
I've got multiple Apple->Android switcher friends, and only one who switched Android->Apple, but he did it because a) he was already in the ecosystem with an Apple Watch and b) he wanted a small phone and Google don't make them anymore.

I also frequently copy files to/from my phone via USB, the last time I looked into it you can't do this with an iPhone, that sort of practise has always put me off Apple products, but obviously most people wouldn't find this a problem.

Similar situation here. Long time Android user, all my personal devices have been Android and work gave us iPhone's to use and I just couldn't get into it. I found everything that should be simple and intuitive on an Android (a tap here, a long press here, a swipe here) just isn't on the iPhone. Everything might work well but just felt limited. I know in one example I ran some WiFi scanning apps on Android and get a wealth of information. I was recommending something to my brother who is an iPhone user, but the information was all cut down and didn't have some of the options which I had available to me. I also didn't like the screen on the work iPhone I had, wasn't as responsive to touch, but that could just be the model they gave us. Personally I'd not switch across.

iPhone 15 and Pixel 8 phones are announced in a month so I'd hold off. You can get an iPhone direct from Apple and return it no questions within 14 days, it's a good way to see if they are for you.

I often switch between the Pixels and iPhones, have used pretty much all of them to some degree over the past 3 years. Let me know if you have any specific questions.

Ah yes, I completely forgot about the annoyances of plugging the phone via USB. iPhones are a pain trying to get any information copied across.

Also the lack of a proper file manager on an iPhone is frustrating too. Keeping thinking of more things I dislike on iOS...!

However, for most people it's probably not an issue. It's just that when you're used to a certain way of working, iOS feels very restricted.

Thats what I think im going to do, Ill probably try and look for one maybe with some cracks in the back or something to try and get it a bit cheaper.

I currently have a Pixel 6 Pro, it is a really amazing phone. Part of me is just curious in thinking of having a change after the same for such a long time.

In all fairness I dont really mind being a generation behind and when my contract renews the new phones should be out I think so that will hopefully help me in getting something cheaper.

I cant remember the last time I transferred a file from my phone onto my PC if honest.

Thank you everyone for your input and experiences, I think im going to go down the route of buying an older iPhone to see what its like and have some time to experience it before my contract is due to renew.

Not done it myself but my sister has gone iphone/Android/iphone. Hated her Android phone for the 2 years she owned it. I'm not planning to try iphone anytime soon. I did own an ipod touch years ago at the same time as an android phone though. The fact that apple make it hard to put your own media on their hardware without using their (spy) software puts me off.

I would say no.

Ive been an Android guy from pretty much the beginning and during lockdown I switched to a 12 Pro Max, out of boredom mostly.
After 2 1/2 years of use im quite ready to switch back to Android, just waitin on the Pixel 8 before I make a decision on which phone to get.

I see why people like iPhones, if you want something that 'just works' its grand and very easy to use.
However I do miss tweaking things on Android and the OS in general.

this really... 2 months both new devices will be out, if you can wait

Ask the question in here, which is a forum with mainly Android users and you’ll get a bunch of answers saying don’t change.

You should ask the same question in the Apple forum and obviously you’ll get a bunch of answers saying you should change.

For fairness, do both, read all the answers and then take a decision. Look at the opinions from all users, not just from a predominantly Android user base.

I have recently had an iPhone for work. It's OK but I'm so used to Android that I don't particularly get on with it.

I don't think I'd be patient enough to deal with changing my personal phone to one.

That is a good point, I’ve purchased an iPhone XR to use and try to see how I get on with it. Honestly it’s a pretty good experience I think, the main things I miss from my pixel is the high refresh rate screen, the larger size and some nicer cameras which the 14 or 15 pro max will have.

Up to yet I’ve made the decision I’m going to swap over to iPhone, but time will tell if it goes well by the end of October

I was a long time Android user, as much as I'd love to switch back, Doze has really killed that desire ever since it was introduced.

I can't deal with not receiving notifications instantly, Gmail being the prime example here. No matter what settings you toggle, without forcing Doze off in adb notifications are always delayed. The number of times I'd unlock my phone after a while and have a flurry of notifications flood in, just not acceptable in this day and age.

It wasn't just Gmail but other apps that inhibit this behaviour.

iOS is much more polished and stable I have found, no delays whatsoever and majority of apps run much more polished and stable.

Each OS has their pro's/cons but to me instant notifications seems a very basic function which should work flawlessly.

Mine always arrive instantly on desktop and phone.
You're lucky in that case then. A simple test of this would be:
  • Turn screen off
  • lay phone down on a table (while not charging) face up
  • wait for exactly 6 minutes
  • send yourself an email on your gmail address using a Pc or another phone
  • observe the delay
Once the phone is unlocked or 5ish minutes have passed, the notification will appear

Try this with an iPhone and Android and you'll get that email come through on iPhone instantly. 9/10 times it will not on Android.

Plenty of coverage of this online too:
