Im seriously considering upgrading to am5 platform, my 5800x3d has done me proud but im thinking of the future a little bit more eg when i upgrade my gpu.

At the moment i game @1440p and will continue to do so for quite some time as not long bought a msi qdoled 240hz monitor, which is awesome by the way.

Also i have a rtx4070 at the moment which is still doing ok, but im defo going to be wanting to upgrade it at some point, the money side of things dosnt bother me ( no, im not rich lol)
as i will be saving until xmas to upgrade.

Do you think i will gain much at the moment? also, is it better to go all out and buy the 9800x3d over something else for 1440p gaming?

Just want to future proof my cpu etc as longs as i can into the future, will probably keep the 4070 for quite a while after the cpu upgrade though as always go mid tier and dont really like the gains that the 5070 offers.

Thanks

Honestly can't answer this for you as I only went from a 5900X to a 9800X3D but having the faster memory, extra NVME drives has made it worth it for me, the speed of the system is far greater than I thought it would be compared and the old one was no slouch. I will be upgrading to a 12 core X3D when they release next year and will likely only lose a few hundred in the process.

I'd wait until you do the graphics upgrade, since if you upgrade now you'll be getting less performance than you would in the future and the 4070 doesn't need a much faster CPU.

Thanks for replies so far, mmmmm what to do lol i play all sorts of games really, from rpgs to racing games like forza and f1, i suppose my favorite type of game is online competitive games like battlefield though, cant wait for battlefield 6.

If not the platform upgrade what gpu upgrade would benefit me? as ive seen the 5800x3d bottlenecks a 4090 and a 5080 @1440p, but not so much @4k

Thanks again for replies so far

5070ti or 9070XT would be the minimum I'd consider coming from what you have, if you play a lot of Warzone AMD demolishes Nvidia right now and the 9070XT is actually a fair chunk faster than the 5080 in that particular title.

Thanks for suggestion, warzone is one of the games im not really into, more into team deathmatch type shooters than battle royal, do you think the 5800x3d will bottleneck the 5070ti much @1440p?

Yep, I have the nitro version and is really quality gpu

Nah, I'd be happy running a 4090 on a 5800X3D in most situations and I own the CPU myself.

I'm honestly planning on waiting until AM6 or at least the final gen X3D on AM5 before changing platform.

The above review actually uses a 4090, hold in mind the 14 game average for 1080P is going to be more CPU bottlenecked, at 1440P you'll be spot on and there's not a massive difference anyway.

Hold in mind the 5070ti is roughly 4080S speeds.

Thanks for replies, got a lot to think about, i do still have a itch to upgrade to am5, but will have a while to think about it all until i have the cash saved.

Thanks again

Honestly, if it really is just an upgrade itch and you're happy with performance? Hang fire, you have a decent 1440P GPU and for the price you pay vs uplift with the current gen GPU's? The Nvidia 5000 series is shockingly disappointing and barely faster than the prior gen, in fact it's actually slower in one or two albeit niche scenarios. The "Super" variants are due out not so far down the line, but again they used the full chips for the initial stack so the only thing left in the bank is more VRAM and clockspeeds. I'd wait for whatever the 6000 series or AMD equivalent brings personally, and I do get the temptation factor because I was really hoping to move to a 5070ti or 5080 over my current 4070 but the entire line up shy of the 5090 was so disappointingly cack I refuse to spend the money Nv are asking for more of the same + multi frame gen.

It's your decision, but I really don't think it's worth it right now. You have a great CPU and a great platform. You could easily wait out another AMD gen, perhaps even AM6 sockets (or maybe even Intel, if they can get their act together and release a good CPU). Your performance gains will be marginal with a CPU upgrade unless you're playing very heavily CPU-demanding games or move to something like a 5090. Though I recommend AM5 for new builds, the price you're going to pay for having to swap out not just the CPU, but also the mobo and ram, is atm quite high for my tastes. Of course, it's as another poster stated a personal decision. I myself was planning on going with AM5 after wanting to upgrade my previously 3800X-based system, but after having snagged a 5700X3D for about 160 quid during a special promotion, I reminded myself that I better use that longevity I bought into AM4 for years ago.

As far as GPUs go, I myself got burned, quite literally by blackwell, so unfortunately this gen seems to be a real disappointment. The Super series is expected later this year, or at the very latest, at the start of next year. The 5070 and 5080 Super are expected to get major VRAM upgrades, to the tune of 50% more VRAM. This would make the 5070 Super an 18GB card (fixing the VRAM issue) and the 5080 Super a 24GB card, finally making it a good deal over the 70Ti. Plus, we've yet to see what AMD still has up their sleeve and even Intel is dropping hints for new GPUs soon. Some rumors are hinting at a 9080 XT/XTX from AMD later down the line.

Considering you have a 4070, going to a 5070 atm would hardly be an upgrade. As another poster stated, 70Ti/70Xt is the lowest performance class that will give you an actual meaningful upgrade, and even then it won't be groundbreaking.

My advice would be to save the money for a gen that has more to offer.

I would also hang in there until AM6. It is what I am doing. But once you get that upgrade itch... :p

I am guessing AM6 is 2 years or so away now? Works out nicely for me. Will be upgrading case, mobo, CPU, RAM and PSU.
Might even get a new NVME if I think it will make any difference.

Right now I use my Intel Optane for windows and no nvme matches that as far as I know. For gaming I use my 2tb nvme :)

I’m in the process of upgrading my system from a 5800X3d on a 6yr old X570 mobo to a 9800X3d on a B850 mobo. Will be using the 5800X3d to upgrade my daughters PC which has a 3700X.

Also still running Win10 so thought as i’m moving to Win11 to upgrade the system.

Ive really got the itch to upgrade to the 9800x3d lol 2 years seems like a long time to wait, plus, im sure the 9800x3d should last years @1440p....shouldnt it?
