Worth the Upgrade?

Hi all,

Currently mulling over the prospect of upgrading my XFX Geforce 7800GTX 256MB for a ATI X1900XT-X.

Due the native resolution of my TFT I play games at 1600x1200 for the most part.

This a worthy upgrade for a performance boost?

From the bench marks and reviews i'd say a good upgrade..

I'd wait for the new nvidia cards tbh. Resell value on an x1900 will plummet once they're out, the 7800 gtx will still fetch good money.

Can't believe i'm agreeing with someone who gives Americans a bad name (sig) but yeah, wait for the 7900GTX launch :)

Hang on, haven't you got that the wrong way round? 7800GTX will plummet in price as the 7900GT will actually perform the same/faster for about the same cost/cheaper. X1900XT series shouldn't be affected really as it will remain ATi's top card.

egt - how will it hold resell value? There will be a new range out which replaces the now non-produced 7800 series. He needs to get shot now, whilst prices are still high on those cards, even if he doesn't buy a new one until 7900GTX launch and runs a PCI in the meantime.

With people's affinities to some companies, sometimes this clouds advice given.

Thanks for that smids.

I've been doing some more thinking and decided it may be sensible for me to wait and see what nVidia have to offer with their new 7900GTX card. In the meantime try and find a buyer for my current card.

The launch isn't that far away now anyhows. (9th March?)

Yeah - I bought a nice ATi Rage Pro 8MB PCI (cost me £6) card for the times when a card fails and I just need a running computer. I suggest you offload that card ASAP and get one of these just for the meantime so you can then wait for the first week prices to drop etc (if you can hold off playing for that long).

Yes, 9th March is the release date.

Completely unknown - it is likely that they will, as nV are usually good at this kind of thing. Only way to know is to check this site on March 9th...

I was mainly in agreement with the idea of waiting till the 7900GTX launch before making any decision, and yes, selling his current card now is also a wise move.

Also, i suspect the x1900 prices will go down a little after the 7900 launch.

What will happen to the 7900 then when the G80 is released a few weeks later, thought so worthless. :p

What are you talking about? The G80 isn't going to be released a few weeks later.

I know its not hence the :p , but theres a big thread saying it is. :D

How the hell is the 7800 GTX still gona fetch good money when the 7900 is released, but the x1900 wont, fact is if you want to sell a 7800, then sell it before the 7900 is released, otherwise you'll lose a lot.
