I game at 3440x1440 - i have a 240hz monitor, ive scoured the internet and while i can see that i should get a boost at 1440p of maybe 10-15% on the cpu, it also doesnt factor in i should get a boost with the ram.

What do we think, is it worth making the switch, has anyone else gone from 12900 to the 7800x3d?

What GPU?

RAM adds a small framerate boost up to a point but it is generally quickly diminishing returns.
Ive got a 4090 - i was running at 4k before i got this LG oled 3440x1440 monitor so there wasnt really any point in upgrading then, i play mainly trackmania and the frame rate jumps all over the place on that at 1440p - like 120-200fps

From the assetto corsa results that hardware unboxed have:

I think the answer might be yes, it is worth it for that specific game, but I have never seen any benchmarks for it and F1 2022 shows zero benefit from the 3D cache @ 4K.

This would be an expensive sidegrade. Picking up a cheap 13900k is probably the most bang for buck you can get.

Yeah, possibly ill keep my eye open, assuming the 14900k isnt really worth the premium over a 13900k either.

If you could find a 14900k with a great deal it could be worth it, but you're far more likely to find a cheap 13900k on the members market, or other places.

I've got two systems, one with a 7950x3d and another with 13900k. I can't tell the difference in games when using a 4090, they're both amazing. As you can just plug in the 13900k with a BIOS update, it's a very cheap upgrade for you.

Also at 4k you're not going to tell the difference in 99% of benchmarks let alone be able to tell yourself in games, between ddr4 and ddr5.

I just went from a 12700K to a 7800X3D out of the box there wasn't that much difference (both on DDR5) until I tweaked the 7800X3D a bit and it gained 20 fps in Cyberpunk at high with a RTX 4080. First time I was able to get 60fps+ consistently with path tracing on & Ultra @ 3440 x 1440. The 7800X3D seems limited by the temps to the 4850MHz but easily tweaked to 5050MHz (hard limit) consistently with just a slight tweak in the BIOS.

I did it because I regularly build PCs so the i7 12700K will move on in another system but a bit hard to recommend when the these Intel CPUs are better in multi-threaded tasks due to having more cores total.

You would most likely notice the power usage drop though!
