If I can find a cheap x2 4600 for my 939 motherboard, is it worth upgading my fx55 clawhammer and try to match the same overclocking speeds with the x2 of 2.78? and would I notice a huge speed diff with the latest games?

At the moment I can change my cpu multi, but with the x2 you cant right, so how woukd I get 2.78?

The 4600+ X2's multi is locked to 12x. So you have to increase FSB to overclock the chip.

Maybe look at the possibility of a 3800+ X2? They're very cheap and recent ones are hitting 2.6Ghz on stock voltage, and around 2.8Ghz with a little more Vcore.

Jon

At the moment my overclocking settings are 11x253, So to get that same speed on the x2, It will be 232x12. So would the x2 4600 match my fx55 in overclocking terms? and would I see a nice boost?

So do I go for it, or stuck with my trusty old fx55? last night I played bioshock, and it ran fine at max setting at 1024x768, the only game it chugs with is Dirt atm, would a 8800gtx sort this out and play crysis ok??

Thanks mate. the prob is Im no good at saving money, But im getting quite abit of money in about a yrs time. Im trying to make my sys last till then, then I can buy a bad ass pc.

Yeah Ive had a look at the 4800+ for 939 sockets, and there over £100, I would love a fx60, cos that would keep me going for ages.

Before selling my old 1gb mem, I tried it with me new 2gb, filling all 4 slots up and it knocks the clock speed down, it only boots using 2T and couldnt overclock much at all. Will I still have the same probs using all 4 mem slots up with a newer cpu installed? Cos ppl say newer 939 cpus handles the mem better then the clawhammers?

Quoted from me in another thread:

I think all FX55s were E4 revisions, which is why you're getting it dropping RAM speeds etc with 4 sticks.

The newer CPU won't have this problem :)

Jon

What about with overclocking? please say it wont overclock, now Ive just sold my memory. I did get £74 for it, I was only expecting £50, but it was "Corsair 2x 512 MB 3200 XL Pro" timings of 2 2-2-5 1cmd

So if I got a new cpu for my 939 board, and bought another 2 sticks of 515mb (total 3gb) I will be able to overclock passed 220-230 with my memory, At the moment my mem is overclocked to 253, and yeh I know I wont get that out of it with all slots being used, but I need to get any cpu I have to 2.78

If you do intend on buying more mem i would advise buying a 1gig kit that matches your current 2 gig kit
this way you should have more room for overclock if they are all the same brand

I think you can only buy 1gb x2 of corsair 3500LL pro and that cost me £160 a few month ago

The Manchesters will clock pretty high because of the lower amount of L2 cache to hold it back. And the Opterons will clock high because they run cool and tend to not need as much voltage with increased FSB to remain stable as 'normal' X2s.

The Toledos are the only ones which don't overclock particularly well, but even then, some of these have been very good.

If you can't get the memory to run at the speed you want it to, just stick a divider on it :)

Jon

Im mad spending that kind on money on memory arn't i? I have no idea of memory divider setting, and no idea what im looking for in the bios???

yep the x1950 will run crysis on allmost full

I Dont believe that,, Crysis graphics cant be tha amazing then, if thats the case. But saying that bioshock runs full detal at 1024, but the graphics doesnt bilow my away accept at the start of the demo, graphics are pretty amazing then.

Same clock speed, but the FX has an unlocked multiplier.

It will be locked at 12x right? who needs unlocked multipiler when my £160 mem will do 250 and over

So the 185 can do 2.8 easy? at what temps? cos might aswell use my stock heatsink and fan, cos its done a real good job ad keeping my fx55 cool

I will prob buy a new 1 with a heatsink/fan supplied, shoud I get about £100 for my fx55 clawhammer cpu?

Im guessing for the 185s the cpu multi will be 12? so to overclock it to 2.8 the memory will have to be on 233 or 234mhz

My opty 185 will be here tomorrow:D Any tips on getting my heatsink of the cpu, cos Im guessing it will be stuck cos its been on there almost 3yrs?
