Is it worth upgrading my 7950 twin frozr 3 to something newer or will my old rig bottleneck a newer gpu too much for me to see any major gains. I currently have an xeon x5460 running at 4.3ghz on an asus p5k-e and 8gb ram.

It would be an unbalanced build but you definitely would see improvements in most games. At 4.2ghz that CPU really isn't that bad at all.

I don't think I would upgrade personally though, I'd lean towards waiting another year or two and then upgrading the CPU and GPU together for a bigger jump.

Yeah I was thinking about a SSD. Would it still be worth getting a new gpu now with a view to using the new gpu in a new rig next year, sort of spread out the upgrade or would it be pointless with the cpu I have now?

Yeah theyre cheap as chips, i just did the same to give my PC a bit more grunt for my new 1440p monitor. On 1080p i wouldnt have thought ya would need more gpu power yet though.

Are you struggling on games? or just got an upgrade itch :)

Skyrim can struggle a bit sometimes but thats probably all the mods. Dont think i can crosfire its an old socket 775 mobo so dont think it has enough bandwidth but i could be wrong.

Yeah i found Skyrim start to get a bit laggy once ya get all the pretty mods on, and going crossfire didnt help that much either as the game went a bit shaky when i forced crossfire on.

That hynix isn't particularly fast but its an amazing price! Wow. I'd recommend a minimum of 256GB though...it's shocking how quickly modern games will fill that up. Some games require 40GB+ nowadays.

Yeah just looked at my games folder think I would need the 240 or 256gb. What model do people recommend and is there any make/type to avoid. I know nothing about ssds so am a bit lost!

A lot of people go for Crucial drives, Intel and Samsung supposed to be good. Don't think you get many bad drives really. Prices of SSDs much better than before as well. Should get 240/256 for not too much. Pay a bit more and you can consider a 480gb drive.

Well up until a few hours ago I was not even considering a 240/256gb drive. Dont think i can afford to stretch to a 480 but I suppose that depends what I decide to do on the gpu front!

256GB SSD (I'm a big fan of the samsung drives myself for value and performance). Install your OS on it along with any daily use progs, and anything else goes on a mech drive unless it needs loading speeds (eg photoshop, games with lots of loading screens or streamed textures). Honestly the biggest upgrade I have had in the last 3 years was going solid state. See how you stand next year once we see what AMD have to offer on their new lineup.

Have you got a SSD ? If not buy one to solve your upgrade itch and have a faster loading system.

This.

I had a 7950 and loved it. It pretty much maxed everything on a single 1080 but I got the itch...

Spent £600 on my DHS and as epic as it is I hardly see anything in game - only benching. Save the money until you struggle whilst gaming.

Just bought this Crucial MX100 256GB SATA 2.5” 7mm SSD I know its not the best but whats peoples opinions on it?

I have the exact same drive and I'm happy with it. The difference in bootup/install times is just bonkers. It might not be the fastest drive all around but it's pretty nippy and does its job flawlessly.

Cool sounds good. Would have loved to gave got the 512gb but only the 256gb was on offer. Just have to work out how to clone my raid 0 main drive onto it then all will be good!
