Ive been using an AMD r9 390 card now for a couple of years and with Vega now out of the gates im wondering if it is worth while upgrading my card now.
I generally only play WoW at as high a setting as i can on a Benq 28" 144hz 1440p Freesync monitor
I dont have all the added extras switched on as in some areas even the freesync dosent stop the screen lag and tearing
I was considering waiting till sept untill the Vega 56 cards come out because at present there are no new super games im really really want to get my hands on.
I dont forsee any CPU issues as currently running the Intel Core i7 5820k @4Gz with a lovely 16Gb quad channel memory to go with it.

Would i see a good improvment on what i have or just marginal, im aware both the rx 480 and 580 were slight upgrades from my current GPU which is really only a slight upgrade from the r9 290

Hi, Apparently Vega 56 is being brought forward so hopefully both v64 & v56 AIB models will start to appear over the next few weeks. Just keep an eye out.

slight upgrade from the r9 290

I would still be on a 290 if one of my fans didn't literally fall off and force me to get a 390 so I'm in same boat as you, Vega's seem disappointing, going to 56 doesn't seem like a worthwhile upgrade for me, 64 is Ti price so may as well get a Ti, I'm just holding out for Ti's to drop a little lower, I do have a little extra leeway though as I'm still playing at 1080p and not too fussed about moving up to 1440p or 4k, if you can afford it though a Ti would probably be the better choice over 56/64 because of the extra performance increase and would be perfect at 1440p even without freesync

The reality is though it's a horrible time for upgrading thanks to brexit making the £ weaker, miners buying out all the cheap stock and AMD not really being able to compete with Nvidia on high end

The problem there is the 1080Ti even at the lower end of the scale come in at the fat End of £650 + where as im hoping the Vega 56 come in at the mid £300 mark and as they are from what ive seen so far comparable to a 1070

Yeah the 56 will be a good shout if you're specifically looking for 3rd/2nd tier upgrade, for me I'm looking for top tier (not including silly price Titans) and the 1080ti wins hands down right now.

Right now it's basically 2 options

If you're looking at 1070 range best to wait for Vega 56 as it's looking like it will beat the 1070 easily for similar price
If you're looking vega64/1080 range it's better to shell out the extra and go for a Ti unless you want to opt for the cheapest 1080

There's also 3rd option of going 2nd hand route but thanks to the mining craze I could never trust buying 2nd hand GPU, you just never know whether it's been enslaved for 24 hours a day mining coins and is on its last legs so it's not really an option I'd consider

Looking at the Vega 56 as it is close too the 1070 in performance and beating it sometimes, and the 1070 is a good 30% better than the R9 380 id say thats probably where i will end up.
That little extra bump in performance should allow me to engage a few more of the extra shineis in my current games at 1440p but should still allow me to play all of the newer ones if the fancy takes me to buy a new game

In DF and TPU reviews which have a decent selection of games it tends to beat it:

https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/Radeon_RX_Vega_56/

TPU places the Vega56 has being 51% faster than the R9 390 example they have, whilst consuming less power doing it.

I was thinking about upgrading to Vega 56 from an RX 480 8GB, seeing as I can currently sell it for more than I paid... Opinions?

I dont think its worth upgrading gpu for WoW. Generally not gpu demanding, just singlethreaded cpu bottlenecked from the old engine.

Nothing you can really do about dropping frames in crowded places

That new particle density option was hitting my gpu hard last time i tried playing (980ti), the increase in view distance too. Definitely a lot more demanding on gpu power than the previous expansions.

I think you're okay in waiting for a little of WoW is all you play. Either for the Vega56 or I would personally wait for the Volta which shouldn't be too much longer.
