Worth upgrading or not?

So I am looking to see what it would cost and what benefit it would be, to upgrade my PC.

I have:
ROG maximus vi formula MB
I4770k @3.5 water cooled
samsung ssd 850 pro 256gb boot disk
3 other HDD for storage
GTX 980 GPU
cooler master gx750 bronze psu
16gb crucial ballistic elite ram
running 2x 27" gsync dell S2716DG monitors so staying Nvidia GPU

initially looking at a simple 2070s upgrade for around £500-600, but was wondering if a £1.5k budget would build a complete unit that was noticeably faster for occasional gaming & working from home - ideally as quiet as possible and little or no RGB

I would be prepared to look at pre owned components or new, could build myself, or buy complete. Just out of further interest, how much would my PC be worth, ball park, to sell on?

Cheers

On a normal day I would have said just purchase the RTX 2070 Super and see if you are happy with the performance. You could save £900 for the time being, and when you are ready, buy a new complete build (minus GPU). But right now, it is currently the worst time to buy a GPU. New cards from AMD and Nvidia are due out in about 4 months. Also we are due the next Ryzen CPU architecture as well. Also the whole worldwide lock-down is causing stock issues and price inflation to various PC components. If you can wait.....then wait. My personal opinion

Well, yes, I see that - but there is always something to wait on isn't there? As of just now, I don't believe there is a confirmed release date for new GPU series from either amd or nvidia - they could be 6 months away, and then more time for availability?

My gut feeling is just go 2070s, and that I wouldn't see a 'real' improvement on changing MB to DDR4 and NVME, but...but, it would be cool....?

Yeah you are right about the whole waiting part. My only thing is that we have been on Nvidia's Turing architecture (RTX 20xx series) for nearly 2 years old now. So this isn't just a small increment. And pricing may be good cause there seems to be competition from AMD now.

In terms of the 2070s. The i7 4770k is still a very capable CPU. You can definitely get a nice boost in the modern games AAA with a 6 core 12 thread CPU now as newer games like more than 4 cores. You won't get a huge boost in average FPS for the majority of games in comparison to just a GPU upgrade. But you will get a "better" gaming experience with less stutter and smoother frame times with a new CPU.

If you want now... get the RTX 2070 Super and hold on to your current build until your no longer happy with it

I'd wait for the new cards and revamp the system then, especially as you're running 1440/144hz - I reckon that CPU will bottleneck the 2070S, which is awful value atm anyway and already the bare minimum I would consider for gaming at that res/fps going into next gen

Do you feel like you can wait gda_scooby?

I am looking to upgrade myself but I want to wait until AMDs new CPUs are released. I've noticed that prices have inflated too and it's put me off.
