Hi All,

Looking for a bit of advice here, is it worth upgrading the following PC I have:

CAS: CoolerMaster Elite 310 Mid Tower Gaming Case with see-thru side panel

CD: 24X Double Layer Dual Format DVD+/-R/+/-RW + CD-R/RW DRIVE (BLACK COLOR)

CPU: AMD Athlon(TM) II X4 640 Quad-Core CPU w/ HyperTransport Technology

FAN: AMD ATHLON64 CERTIFIED CPU FAN & HEATSINK

HDD: 500GB SATA-II 3.0Gb/s 16MB Cache HDD (Single Hard Drive)

MEMORY: 4GB (2x2GB) PC10666 DDR3/1333mhz Dual Channel Memory

MOTHERBOARD: ASUS M4A87TD EVO AMD 870 Chipset CrossFireX Support DDR3 Socket AM3 ATX w/ 7.1 Audio, GbLAN, IEEE1394a, USB3.0, SATA-III, RAID, 2 Gen2 PCIe, 1 PCIe X1, & 3 PCI

POWERSUPPLY: 600 Watts Power Supplies [+12]

VIDEO: ATI Radeon HD 5450 PCI-E 512MB Video Card

I'm wanting to do some mid-high level detail gaming... So I'm wondering if there are any upgrades I could make that could be taken into my next build? Or should I simply save my pennies and make a new build altogether, which would probably be the end of this year.

Cheers,

TF

Fair play, it's been a very quick 6 years since I bought it!

PSU is 600W, not sure what make.

I guess the only things I could save are the PSU and Case?

And possibly the HDD as a backup to SSD?

Yes m8 depending on what psu it is, i would aim as a budget at around £500 to £600 and maybe get a new complete build. You could sell the other system to help fund the new build.

OK thanks for the advice dude, I may as well see how much I can get for it. Unfortunately it's running Ubuntu at the moment, so I may have to get a copy of Windows to get shot of it.

It would be an upgrade, but you aren't going to hit mid on any games with the rest of your rig. The CPU is too slow and you don't have enough memory.

The best you could do is install an SSD, that will make the biggest noticeable improvement.

Wouldn't an SSD install just decrease boot time?

I might anyway, as it's something I can take into a new build. Any recommendations based on my mobo? Or should I get an ext?
