Got a MSI Gaming 5 board that has 16GB of DDR3 1333. Is there any tangible benefit to sticking 16GB of DDR3 2400 in there instead? Any boosts of real value in helping with overclocking the CPU?
- Overclock your CPU
- Play games
- Won't be upgrading for a year or so
- May get a newer CPU in the future
- Can get a good price
Then, the faster ram would increase your minimum frame rates by a bit in CPU bound scenarios. The main consideration is the price. Keep an eye on sales for a bargain.
I don't plan to upgrade the board or CPU this year (4790k), but was hoping some faster RAM would help me get better overclock/stability.
I wouldn't want to spend more than £40/50 on 16GB of some fast DDR3 2400 so maybe I'll need to keep an eye for a sale. Price seems unlikely to drop that hard.
The new CPU's (Haswell-E, Skylake, Broadwell-E) don't work with DDR3 - they are DDR4 only.
Completely pointless upgrading to faster ram at the moment. Wait until you upgrade your CPU/Mobo then get 16/32GB of DDR4 3200+.
Though I don't expect 16GB to be saturated for another 5 years at least - I've never seen my system go over 10GB of used RAM when gaming, and that's why Skype and a bunch of chrome tabs open at the same time.
