My current system is bit old with few minor upgrades over the years but it needs a complete over hull now

Rig: Asus A8N Premium (939), AMD x2 4200+, BFG 8800 GTS OC 640MB, 2GB DDR (2x1GB), Hiper 550w

I'm gonna say I've got a budget around £300-£400

Whats the best rig I can build now with that budget I would also like to get a decent sound card

Hey the upgrade will be based on the socket 775 (tight budget) you can get The asus rampage 2 extreme (which has the Xfi soundcard) and the Core 2 Quad 8200. Total:422.98 It will be a worth will upgrade.

Just use your graphics card for now :p

Wouldn't quadcore be a better option? I also don't need a case as I will just reuse the old antec one I have will I need a new PSU?

psu should be fine, i'd go the following overclock the 5200, try the onboard sound first if that doesnt cut the mustard then have a look at the asus xonar sounds cards (around £60), if your preference really is for a sound card then drop the gfx card and get a xonar.

GO for the C2Q . The dual core is outdated I have the E5200 ,it good and I overclocked it to 3.2 on air on the Asrock G31M-s mobo but the C2Q will munch through it. I say you go for he i7 now new technology and everything ,but you budget is low. Why don''t you save some money and buy and i7 pc. I'm buying an i7 pc next summer (yeah)

Do you think upgrading to the AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 955 Black Edition 3.2GHz (Socket AM3) - Retail which is only around £80 more than the tri-core would be a good option?

Thanks guys the power supply I've got the 580w Hiper Type-R in blue some reason I thought it was a 550w.

Also one more question because I can wait do you think it would be worth waiting around till the summer and save a bit of money?

If not planning to upgrade anytime soon, then yes go for it. Otherwise the tri-core's are a real bargain & perform quite well.
