Worthwhile upgrade from 8800GTS640?

I also have a 8800GTS-640 and use 1920*1200 but the performance is fine in Fallout 3 with Ultra settings and 4xAA, I have even edited the ini files to get more draw distance and modded the game with 1024 textures.
I do run my 8800GTS at 650/2000Mhz.

Have you overclocked your 8800GTS or is it stock?

I am also looking at a faster card and decided that getting a midrange card like a 4850 or GTX260 i'sn't worth it now and that I will wait for the die shrinked GTX260 later in the year to decide.

Lol thats a load of ****! No way can the 8800GTS 640 run fallout at 1920x1200 with 4xAA unless you class 10FPS as playable

Stop talking bull

To the OP, I just upgraded from an 8800GTS 640 to a 4870 1Gb and its a sizeable jump

yeah my gts-640 has still got some life in it, I overclocked it to gtx speeds
and yeah its fine for fallout3 at highest settings @ 1920*1200

turned down the aa to 2* though feels a lot more fluid

gonna try and hang on till nvidia release there next cards though, but 260-216 is very tempting atm

Running Fallout 3 here at 1920x1200 on an 8800GTX @ Ultra settings with 2XAA and gameplay is very smooth.Same settings with 4XAA is also very playable but 2XAA seems to remove enough of the aliasing for me.

Not sure how much quicker a GTX is than a GTS 640,not by much iirc,so it's quite feasible that Dutch Guy is running FO3 at those settings.

It isn't bull, performance outside is over 30fps and indoors over 60fps, my 8800 is overclocked to 650/1500/1000 though so hardly a stock card.

And those are with increased LOD distances and a 1024*1024 texture pack

bfg 8800gt 640meg "oc" here and i run fallout 3 with ultra settings but with most of the draw distances back one notch and also installed "Terrifically Terrific Landscape Texture Tune-up" mod which replaces many textures from 512 size to 1024 size and it's smooth as silk most of the time. turning on v-sync helps a lot too.

i'm still using very old 163.75 drivers which i find the best overall for my 8800, maybe uninstall your newer ones and go back to drivers that were being tweaked for the 8800 or 9800 cards like the 163.75's?

oh and directx redist november 2008, but dunno if that makes any difference but it did overwrite a lot of files after installing fallout3 i'm guessing fallout3 installs an older dx on installation.

love fallout3! gaaaarrrryyyyy! lol :)

To the OP if you have not already overclocked your gts 640 see if you can, Then you can probably hold off getting a new card till the next wave of cards come out, will mean you will get more for you money when price of the
current cards drop

im hoping to do this and use my gts 640 for physx, and to drive a couple of touchscreens

I ran my overclock in software for a couple of weeks gaming to make sure it was ok, then i flashed the overclocked settings to the graphics cards bios, once i was sure that it was stable (650/1500/1000)

I have a BFG OC1 at 620/1400/900
On max everything on fallout 3 and x2FSAA, v-sync with triple buffering I get about 45fps average according to fraps. This on latest BIG BANG 180.xx drivers.
However there is fine microstutter so I wouldn't say it smooth as glass...Playable
That's on 2gb 6400 900mhz ram and a 3.15ghz E6300

I 'considered' the XFX Black Edition, beast of a card and used to be £217 new, now its gone up:( Never had the money or the nads to buy it but thought i'd chip in as I was in the exact same position.

Waiting for 55nm results, but still won't have *** money, love being a student:mad:

@ dunker what are these additional textures you speak of? do you have a link pls? danke
