I'm currently thinking about getting a GTX470 to replace my HD4870 512MB. Can anyone advise if this is likely to show a decent improvement in performance?

Will be used for gaming at 1920*1200 res, 4870 has seen me well for a while now but think it's getting about time to get something new.

I was considering waiting for the 6xxx series as I won't have the option to go sli with my board but would quite like to buy something today - is the 470 likely to be a good option as a single card for a while ?

(specs)
Phenom ii 955 @ 3.4GHZ
Asus M4a79T Deluxe
4GB corsair dominator 1333mhz
700w coolermaster silent extreme psu
Win 7 64bit

You will see a big improvement over your 4870 512mb card especially when it comes to applying high levels of AA. Fermi eats AA for breakfast. You will also gain TRSAA (a new type of AA), Physx, 3D and more vram. :)

OR, give it a couple of weeks and see whats leaked out about the new 68XX series from ATI ;)
Obviously, if physx is really important to you (guessing not as you had a 4870 before) and you just can't wait then go for a 470.
I think you would be a fool to jump now, unless waiting just wasn't an option.

I always find it hard to wait when i have money burning a hole in my pocket :D but the 470 will be a gr8 upgrade so would a 5850

I know what you mean but I have been caught out before. When I upgraded to a 7800gt, a couple of weeks later the 7900's came out and the 7900gt was similar (if not faster??) than the 7800gtx :(

Decided to just go through with it after much chin scratching, should turn up tomorrow so something new and shiny to play with on my day off. Got the Asus 470 from this week only offers.

Ati prices this gen just haven't come close to the amazing value they were around the time the 4890 was released when you could pick up a 4870 for peanuts. If the 6xxx series is shown to completely beat it on price and performance then i'll just auction it and buy again in the new year and hopefully wont lose too much - with the price some people will pay on ebay for cards.

+1 am the same as you cant help just taking the plunge :D

As you have a decent card in the 4870 I would wait until benchmarks are released for the new ATI cards. I got a 5850 not long ago, but I only had a 7300GT as back up so couldn't really play a lot. 470 is a bit of a bargain at the moment though.
